I really have no idea about couplers etc but any time I do a conversion I always use MT stuff for reliability. With regards the price difference between MT and Bachmann - "you get what you pay for".

500' - darn, that will be an impressive bridge. Mine only represents something like 90' ... so when you build yours I'll definitely be watching, especially as yours is steel construction.

There are a variety of materials that can be used for "scratch building" - wood (basswood, balsa) styrene, card stock being the main materials.

I made the spacing 1.5" (about 20') however, I am led to believe it can be anywhere from around 15' to 25'.

You can possibly get it...

With the water slide decals - have you tried using Micro Sol? If not, get some, it works well to soften and drag the decal into all those little nooks and crannies. It does a great job of "forcing"...

And ... they are dropped from great heights :)
