If you want to use foam then I recommend trying to source something called Gatorboard. Online art shops will sell it.
Both the outer skin and interior foam are much tougher than regular foam board....

I'd have thought something like a stencil would be better suited to etching or decals.
Much crisper edges and both etches and decals are flexible whereas a 3D print would be rigid.

    Here's an...

Cool. Thanks for running those tests Nskale.
I think kit form is looking like the way to go with these as they've printed remarkably well. Plus flat and kit form works better for making resin cast...

    OK. Here we go :D

I've been putting together 3D models of tanktainers and having them printed by Shapeways. The results are fairly good but there are some limitations not least the cost but also...

Interesting. I actually didn't realize you needed supports with FDM 3D printers, I'd always associated that with resin printers.

I might have a challenge for you if you're interested; an N scale...

    Hi Nskale

    Looks good.

I'm watching this with interest too as my 3D printing endeavours have somewhat stalled due to the price of Shapeways printing here in Europe. :g-luck:

Definitely, I bought some from Eurolokshop when I lived in the USA. I was always a little puzzled as to how they could be so much cheaper in the States though.

    Hi Maurice

    Can anyone use this service?
I'm interested in finding an alternative to Shapeways in Europe, the models I was making were so detailed it was almost impossible to get all the wax...

    Hmmm, interesting.

There's a lot of people looking for an alternative to Shapeways these days. Me too but I'm in Europe and I think the shipping and import costs would be prohibitive for me.

I've been painting some of the tanktainer models I've had printed so I thought I'd show off the pictures.

    Hi Sam

The models come in two main pieces (tank/frame) so you have full access to the tank to paint and decal before final assembly. I still paint with a brush so this was quite high on my...

    Hi Craig

    Thanks

The time is in the CAD really and I've found how long that takes usually depended on how good my reference materials were. The better your references the less time you spend...

    Hi Ed

I've always had success using artists synthetic paintbrushes intended for acrylics. I've got one as small as 4/0 (which is tiny) but apparently they go as small as 20/0 which must be verging...

    N Scale Tanktainers

    Hello

I've been fascinated by the seemingly endless variation in tanktainer designs and liveries for a while now.
As there isn't much of a range, either ready-made or in kit form in N scale, I...

Having done some further reading it's actually pretty amazing what can be done now. They have rail car scanning machines that can differentiate between cars and locos to protect...

    Another Vote For FreeCAD

Bit late to this but I'd second FreeCAD. I've learnt it from scratch with no prior experience and it is a very capable program despite the odd issue now and again.
