    I have all metal wheels on my cars, I can't stand the sound of plastic wheels and no rolling stock runs on my layout unless it has metal wheels. But I do get gunk too.

    Both metal and plastic wheels will get gunk on them. Because of the size of N scale, sometimes the gunk can even cause derailments!
    I get the gunk out by just wetting a paper towel with isopropyl...
