844 is a Northern 4-8-4, only "available" as a Bachmann AFAIKT ...will need serious mods besides renumbering ...not a trivial task!

EDIT: Sorry for the awful typing job there guys, fixed now....

I'm sure there are models made of brass = $$$$$

I'm not real familiar with UP & the 844, is this Con-Cor 4-8-4 close? where you coudl do some minor mods?

Not at all. That's an SP 4-8-4 like #4449. Con-Cor made superficial modifications to this engine and released it in other roadnames. In this case, the smoke deflectors can't disguise that it still has a skyline casing, an SP-style smokebox, and a 6-axle tender, among other things.

so here is a googled up844.
looks like a longer loco? longer elephant ears? and a challenger/big boy centepede tender. you can buy those tenders still from Con Cor parts. I guess it depends on hwo rivit counter you want it to be. and how many modifications you want to make.

I did not think they made one, but I had to ask. Looks like its going to take a lot of work to bash one togather.

I'm currently working on a heavy conversion of the Con Cor 4-8-4 to Santa Fe 3751. The BIG problem you would have in converting one into UP 844 is that the tender and loco are permenently joined and the tender contains electronics for the loco. As stated earlier 844 has a centipede tender.

I think this is about as close as you're going to get right out of the box. It's a Bachmann 4-8-4 Northern with the UP oil tender. Swap out the tender and add some work to the loco and you should be good. Make sure you get one of the new releases as the old ones are dogs. The new ones come in an all plastic jewel case and have blackened drivers with smaller flanges and silver connecting rods. The old ones are in a cardboard box and have silver rods.....avoid these!

This is the older release. Note the silver rods. Do not get this one.

This is the newer version. It runs MUCH better.

    Elephant ears - use styrene

That Bachmann 4-8-4 looks like a better match to start a bash. much cheaper too. but IMO, I think that Con-Cor is a much better looking loco. but I know you are trying to match/build that one.

Con-Cor centipede tender is $39.99 plus shipping form Con-Cor. that is if they answer your email/phone call and actually ship it to you.

I wonder if Athearn will stock their new 4-6-6-4 challenger tender? and how much? I bet it is better detailed, running, power pickup.

    Good Luck!

Closer, perhaps...but it's the wrong scale.

Isn't Athearn supposed to be coming out with a new UP Northern? No idea when that'll be, though...

UP 844 (aka UP 8444) has only been produced in n-scale brass by Key Imports (as has been noted) ...and I'm relatively sure that the Key Imports model UP-843 Kozmo found on eBay, was part of that same run ... what I'm not sure of is whether or not the "elephant ears" were/are included with 843 (possible detail add-on??); otherwise all one would have to do is change the number.

The Key Imports brass model was/is still a very good piece. BTW .. the current bid of $414.00 would make this an excellent buy ... provided it holds at that figure. The original new price was close to $900.00.

Brass, I try to avoid the brass builds. Little too much for me. I'm going to look into how much it would be to bash one. If its too much, i'm going to scrap 844 idea, and go for 3985. Either way I still need to get the cars these two beasts pull.
