    Actually, it says "extra large wheels" in the story you linked to, and I see no photographs showing the wheels.

    The railroads generally measure wheel size as the hight of the wheel from one tread to the other. i.e. it does not include the flange. The diameter of the wheel is probably larger than that of typical TGV equipment.

    Yes, you are of course right. One story does specifically say larger diameter wheels to increase speed. And I could not find and doubt any story references "pizza cutters".

    I should have added appropriate emoticons :wink: :shock: etc etc (which is tongue in cheek one?) so you would have gotten my point. I was poking a little fun, referring to some previous threads (

    The TGV does not use pizza cutters, but just a larger diameter wheel. Believe it was a 46" wheel the last time they broke the record. Reason is simple, takes less revolutions of the wheel to go a set distance, therefore, if the wheel is larger, can spin at the same speed as a smaller wheel, but will travel farther, thereby making the train go faster.
