    My serious guess is that the railroad is not literally 375 feet long, but rather has a simple enough track plan that the whole thing can be compressed into 28x8 without losing any of the plan.

    Something like a 10 mile branch line with two small industries on it.
    Never mistake a guy who talks a lot for a guy who has something to say...

    I'm holding to the idea that the intent was to model "a complete prototype railroad in 28x8 inches" without selective compression, or reducing the Union Pacific to two stations connected by a single piece of flex track.

    The posts contemporary to the thread alluded to a lack of operating potential, interest on the level of a ball of lint, a specific mention of "cable" and a suggestion that the railroad might be "a fun addition to a busy city model." This led me to buy Conrailandrew's thought that the subject was a cable car or funicular railway.

    I dig the idea of a modeling complete railroad with no compression. I'm working on plans to build an operating shelf layout that models the entirety of the Vatican Railway in Rome. It's a very short short line, going from just outside the Vatican walls, to inside a head shunt (switchback) inside a tunnel within the Vatican. It has a station, a freight siding with loading platform, another siding, and a runaround. In N-scale, the whole visible part can fit on a 1' x 4' shelf, with a removable fiddle stick for the head shunt.

    Careful; by using a 'fiddle yard' off to the right, you're starting to think like an 'English' railway modeller: they seem to use such devices at almost every opportunity. That would never do...
