The answer to your question is probably not here but,, this is a great site for Amtrak equipment.

    http://hebners.net/amtrak/

There is a Yahoo Amtrak group where, I bet, you can get an answer to your question.

You can also check the Wikipedia articles on the named trains. Plus or minus the usual accuracy of Wikipedia, it at least went through the lineup and history of the Cardinal...

Well nmanica, if any of my N scale people get injured because the consist was wrong and they were in the wrong car, and thats the car that overturned on my lousy trackwork, you'll hear from my N scale lawyers, Conum and Bleadem.

Wow that is an a very comprehensive listing just for giggles and as the site now allows it I might put all of that in an Excel spreadsheet and upload it just to see how the site software presents it.

Okay I uploaded an Excel spreadsheet with all the information you provided I don't know if it's of use to anyone hopefully it is just thought I would give it a try as the site just started to allow us to attach them.

Well, the Excel spreadsheet uploads and displays correctly. However, as you can see it is missing an icon!

Thank you, SooLineRob for that comprehensive listing. Are the consist lists supposedly in the actual order of the trains themselves?

If yes, the Silver Meteor and Silver Star are backwards, unless they have revised the sequence recently. I have traveled on both over the last few years and the sequence (at those times) was as follows:

    Silver Meteor
    P42DC
    P42DC
    Heritage Baggage
    Viewliner Sleeper
    Viewliner Sleeper
    Heritage Diner
    Amfleet II Café
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach

    Silver Star
    P42DC
    P42DC (?)
    Heritage Baggage
    Viewliner Sleeper
    Viewliner Sleeper
    Viewliner Sleeper
    Heritage Diner
    Amfleet II Café
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach
    Amfleet II Coach

The Silver Meteor I traveled on also had three sleepers but I suspect the number of sleepers and coaches varies with demand.

This varies a lot from year to year, and sometimes day to day. For instance the City of New Orleans lately is:

    Baggage
    Sleeper
    Sleeper
    Diner
    Lounge
    Coach
    Coach

About 1/3 of the year another coach is common. Transition sleepers seem rare anymore, but from time to time the first one will be one. Sometimes a coach will be a coach baggage, but they still have a baggage when that happens as far as I've seen. Sleepers are closer to the locomotive about 95% of the time, but sometimes the whole consist is turned around for some reason.

The last few trips we've made on the California Zephyr, it consisted of 2 P42's and 2 sleepers. On one other trip, a third sleeper was added in Chicago (according to the Conductor) and it was tail-end Charlie. (It was a long walk to the Dining Car.)The rest of the list seemed to be the same.
It just goes to show that the Amtrak passenger trains are somewhat flexible.

    Mr BryanC and all,

The consist list I posted above was accurate when it was written; and the trains were assembled in the order as indicated on their consist list. I don't remember when that list was created; but was accurate at the time (a specific date). The cars/locos with a (?) behind them note seasonal/equipment availability demands and were subject to daily changes. Amtrak makes "frequent" changes to their train consists, so I have no doubt many of the trains listed don't match up with what everyone is seeing today, 9/29/2010. I recall reading somewhere Amtrak was changing some consists around recently, such as placing the Sleepers on the rear of the trains.

While outdated, the consists listed can give modelers an idea of how to build their trains. Have fun!
