    Default Slatyfork Sawmill build

My layout the SCRL(South Cities Rail Lines) is a logging industry layout and I wanted a sawmill for the center piece. I purchased the Slatyfork Sawmill from RLW. When they say on the RLW home page that this kit contains 1200 piece I was a bit sceptical but when it arrived I was then turned into a believer.

After reading the 30 page directions about 10 times I started the kit. The first parts was the foundation.

    Next was the wall framing

Next was attaching the walls to the framing and the foundation

Next was the windows. This kit has over 120 windows in it.

The roofs were one of the easiest parts of the build since the rafters were pre built.

Next was the floors. The main floor is 6 sections and care was needed to get everything square. Adding the railing and steps to the sawfilers room was extremely fiddly due to the small parts and care needed to place in the correct position.

After this was accomplished the building really started to take shape

Next was building the bents for the jack slip

The jackslip for this build will test even a experienced builder. Building, aligning, and glueing this section will have you cussing and taking alot of time outs.

After building the slipjack entrance and attaching to the building

Next was the walkways, loading docks and log catch on the main floor.

This build took approximately 100 hours to complete. I also bought the interior machinery for this build but after seeing the parts I decided not to use them and will scratchbuild the machinery. I have scratchbuilt 2 other buildings (a drying and storage building, and a crosscut sizing building) to be placed around this industry.

That's a beautiful kit and you did a great job on the assembly. Hope you'll show us the interior machinery when you get it finished. Any chance of seeing the rest of your scratch built structures?

    Thumbs up

That is a great looking structure and you did an excellent job constructing it.
Looks like it is out of my talent range.
Thanx for sharing this with us.

Absolutely bang up job you've done there, S. I've always admired that structure. You have a particularly nice feel for the color choices, varying the wood tones, etc. Thanks for documenting and sharing, and welcome back to the board.

Wow that is an amazing building! And you did a fine job on building it!

What was the issue with the interior kit you purchased? Were you not satisfied with the parts? Appearance? Assembly?

Thanks all for your comments. I will be posting the other scratchbuilds that will be accompaning this build. They are nothing spectacular just buildings that I thought would work with it. As for the the interior, lets just say that they left ALOT to be desired quality wise. OK, they were more like blobs on sprues! Where as the building seemed to be designed for one interior you are faced using someone elses and the quaility just isnt there so I am going to scratchbuild the interior, such as: I got a watchmaker to send me a hour gear from a watch to use as a circular saw blade, will be using a interior kit from SS Ltd(actually an HO kit) for other machinery.
