January quickly become a busy month, as we have our Annual Open House scheduled for Feb 13, 2016. This would be our first chance to open our doors of our new clubhouse to the public.

Knowing that we could not have any the new layouts ready, we decided to put our modular setups on display, while posting some diagrams around the room of the future plans:

Some setup over the past two weeks - HO and N modular layouts:

And, a fancy new sign for the club doors:

Nice! Lots of good progress. It takes a lot just to get a space ready, but once that's done you can start to focus on a layout. So good to have a group of guys that have worked together to accomplish a MRRing dream!

Finally, this weekend, the Open House arrived, and we were ready! The day was a fantastic success from all perspectives. We had roughly 300 people come through, made a couple hundred dollars in donations, and successfully ran trains for everyone to see. We had a lot of positive comments from visitors about how nice the new room was - bright, warm, clean - compared to the old clubhouse. Some of these visitors had come in previous years, so they truly had a valid comparison. As a club, we completely agree!

Even my son dropped by for a surprise visit (he's normally not into the hobby at all)

Being the club president this year, I've essentially led the group through the find-a-new-home process, the reno, the move and all the planning that goes with each step. I've had a great Executive team along side me, and many other members have stepped up and worked hard.

But, you're right, if is very satisfying. A few times during the open house, I just stood at the entrance and watched the crowd, their smiles, and our members interacting with each other and the public. It truly was a proud moment for the club. We've come a LONG way in 8 months.

Well, two years have gone by since I last updated on the club's rebuild. To be honest, I forgot about this thread until I was searching for some other posts in my history.

So... what's been up? During the two years since our first open house in the new space we have made a bunch of progress on both the HO and N permanent layouts. To keep something running during the construction phase, we have kept some of the modules in place, tying them into the permanent layout as sections become stable. Having the modules setup all the time has also allowed us to work on them too - improving electrical standards, painting the track, re-ballasting poorly done sections.

The track work for one of the legs is nearing completion and we're starting into the scenery - 1960's downtown, waterfront trackage, yards, and warehouses. Others in the group have started the benchwork for the new mountain leg.

Most importantly, the new location has much better public exposure. Attendees to the market downstairs must come upstairs to use the washrooms, walking them right by our front doors. We've had a few more open houses to showcase our progress too. These have combined to bump our member count - increasing by 10 since Feb 2016. The club is in great shape financially and socially, and things are moving along well.

We've also been working hard at improving out online following, and do all kinds of regular posts in our Facebook group. We've just come off our busy show season (Open House, Train Show and local mall setup), but if you scroll through you'll see the latest pictures of the club layout. Feel free to join that group if you want to stay in the know.
