For some extra detail on the various bulkheads in the wings, you might drill some lightening holes and glue some stripped wire in there to represent the various fuel, control and hydraulic lines.

Great idea @ChicagoNW ! I'll try to add those details when I find some free time.

But unfortunately, searching ebay does not take a lot of time and I purchased these Red Caboose 42' Flat cars in B&O markings. I'm thinking either 2 engines on each or use them for propellers and landing gear. On the plus side, I found another unbuilt kit for another B-29 while going through my stuff at my parent's place!

    Hello all,

With our club's show fast approaching in December, I am giving this project another push. I wasn't really sure how to tie down the fuselage, so I tried making some tarps!

I tired two different types of material. The first type was tissue paper (for gifts). Both were dipped in 50/50 water glue mixture.

I used two tarps to cover this section. Besides for being very see-through, I was pleased with the results.

The second material was actual tissues (for your nose).

I'm going to have to very carefully paint these I believe. I have a blue that I think will look good.

Don't forget the tie-down ropes for the tarps, a thinner thread would look right.

How else will they stay on the load!? We can't have them flying off during a move!

I was thinking though, what if I added food coloring to the white glue/ water mixture. Would that effectively color the white tissue before applying it to the load?? Whenever I do another one, I will try it out.

Tarps have been painted! They had to reuse a couple tarps to cover the tail section, but the other ones are new!

I raided the wife's sewing kit for some thread for tie downs and this is what I came up with.

    14152189_1223247821038980_1450060969_o.jpg

Not exactly sure if I am sold on this yet or not..... any opinions?

*** Remember, this still needs to be tied down to the car as well.***

Big heavy rope works, now trade out black rope for tan and brown rope and you will have a good setup. Not sure who you will get to help you pick the right color when raiding the wife's sewing kit, but you will probably manage ok lol.

I was thinking that the black thread was too defined. A lighter brown or tan would be much better. Don't worry, I'll be having to purchase the thread so I'll just read the labels!

Working on mounting the engines tonight. I decided to go with this type of configuration. I was going to have them all loaded onto one center depressed flatcar, but I found these two flat cars on ebay for a fair price. So instead of squeezing them onto one car, they have been split onto two cars, I think that it works/looks better.

    14203669_1230830650280697_350055503_o.jpg

The plan is to tarp the rear 3/4 of each engine. I feel that the prototype would be completely covered, but they will draw more attention with at least some of the engine showing.

Add some load tie down straps and this car will be done! Trying to get the pressurized cabin wall to look good took some effort, but I am pleased with how it turned out. A nice added detail that most will look over.

My club has asked me to do a demonstration of how to make the tarps. So I left one w/o a tarp (which I'll do at the meeting), I'll leave one not painted, and then I'll paint the other ones to show each step of the project.

It is coming along nicely. I think the tarps worked well. It covers the cut edges and solves the finicky detailing. Don't forget an overall picture of the finished product.

It has been a long time coming, but.......

    propellers.jpg

Propellers have been mounted. Now time to do some touch up paint, and decide if I need to add tie downs or not.

Well, after a little over 7 years, I am calling this project DONE!

I am home under quarantine orders, so I have been using the time to wrap up as many open projects as I can.

The last two cars completed were these sections of the wings.

    20200402_160808.jpg

The other side of the wings have been completed for some time now.

    20200402_160816.jpg

This project game me an excuse to make a unique car to carry the front part of the fuselage. This is what I ended up coming up with.

    20200402_160822.jpg

The vertical stabilizer has been completed for a while, but I touched up the landing gear and added a few crates to the other flat car.

    20200402_160841.jpg

This is probably my favorite of the cars that came out of this project.

    20200402_160902.jpg

Had to finish one of these cars. All of the motors are loaded and ready to go. Also cool cars.

    20200402_161001.jpg

These two had been complete for some time.

    20200402_161021.jpg

I could see myself doing some more work to the propeller car, but I am happy with how it looks for now.

    20200402_161032.jpg

Total length ended up being 13 cars.
