    Post Weekend Update (24th Nov 2017)

    Please update us on the progress you have made on your MRR projects this week (commencing: 24th Nov 2017).

    This weekly thread is to post little snippets about your layout/project progress.
    This is not be a substitute for your layout build thread, but just a mini update on what you got done for the week.

    You can link from your layout build thread to your posts in this thread as a part of a more extensive post there, or visa-versa (post to your build thread and link to that post when contributing to this thread.

    Added a light kit to Kato's Operation North Pole coaches. Not super easy but satisfying if you take your time and don't rush it.

    NOTE: the light is much dimmer once the basement lights come on. They are only this glaring bright because I turned off the room light.

    Default Car Transport Solutions

    how to safely and securely transport cars halfway across the state? Spent some time over the last three weeks working on this:

    I encountered a locomotive that seems like it was actually underwater -- this was apparently from an estate sale in PA so doubt that it was from any of the recent hurricane flooding.

    Anyway, it was in great cosmetic shape and I initially just did a basic clean and lube (minimal disassembly -- in this case just took off bottom gear cover and tender lid to grease gears and oil motor shaft) and it ran fairly readily. However, it seemed to be dragging quite a bit -- like there was lots of excess resistance. So I took off the shell and found first signs of mud -- actual clumps of clay were inside the shell. So I had to take the chassis apart and low-and-behold, full of mud / clay.

    Thankfully it seems as if the Tender was untouched -- and this is an MDC/Athearn/RoundHouse 2-6-0 so motor is in Tender. Anyway, quite a bit of cleaning and fresh lubrication (and a bit of extra break-in time) and it is running quite nicely.

    Yes, made them myself: a box from the UPS Store, foam core board, and "silly foam" or something like that from Hobby Lobby.

    I finally got to try out Kato's Operation North Pole over the weekend by running all the coaches (lighted!) on a three clubs combined N-Trak layout at a train show. Didn't get a chance to decoderized the loco so pulled it with a freight loco. It was a HUGE layout with three clubs combined modules. At one time, the lead train had mechanical problems so trains behind it were backed up. Before you knew it you had 8 trains behind on a stop order. It was on the straightest part of the layout so you sight down 70 feet and see 8 head lights. It was an awesome sight to witness! I wished I had a picture of that. Steam, diesel, passenger, freight, unit trains...
