Default Alternative Sound Decoder for Athearn F59PHI?

I have an Athearn F59PHI with built-in DCC and Tsunami sound. Recently, while exploring the decoder for function outputs, I accidentally shorted it after failing to realize the speaker wires also functioned as insulation for the motor contacts when I re-installed it (Ooops...). The sounds still function just fine but the loco does not run in reverse, and the momentum CVs no longer function (yes, I tried resetting it).

I emailed Athearn for servicing info but have yet to hear back from them.

In the meantime, I'm also thinking of this as a "blessing" in disguise: Since the mechanism is already DCC-friendly, I could possibly wire in a different sound decoder and get the function outputs that way (I wanted to install working SMD LED ditchlights and even if the stock SoundTraxx decoder had the outputs, I'd probably damage the decoder anyway due to a sloppy solder job as the decoder board's real estate is extremely dense with components). Also, it's a SoundTraxx decoder, which is challenging to program address-wise with a the Digitrax system that I have. I can use the stock speaker, which already has its own receptacle in the frame.

    Any recommendations?

    Hard wire a Loksound decoder?
Or contact Soundtraxx just to see if they can help.
Athearn is useless when it comes to helping n scalers.

According to SoundTraxx, any issue with a decoder-equipped loco must be brought to the loco manufacturer first.
    Which Loksound decoder is recommended?

I don't know for sure, I had one of these in a P42, worked well till I fried the decoder adjusting the pickup strips when I moved the speaker.

I heard back from Athearn today. They said the decoder is "damaged beyond repair" and that a replacement would cost $95.

An ESU sound decoder will cost me $85.

I guess this was all meant to be, eh?
