    Not to over-analyze (since I am sure this is an artist taking some license and not an architect) this but if the door casing came away from the frame instead of the hinge off the casing/frame then it can come apart in this way (casing continuing to provide some structure but no longer being square / attached to wall). Having ripped out quite a few old doors / windows in my house I can tell you that at various point there were all kinds of wonky doors/windows hanging on in strange ways... Not sure if barn doors are assembled in similar way as 120+ year old homes but windows and doors have lots of layers holding them together...
