One of the lots I bought this month came with a bunch of flatcars w/ military loads. I don't model military stuff so does anyone know what these are potentially worth? Flatcars are MTL w/ MTL trucks and I believe the tanks / personnel carriers are Roco / Herpa but not sure (tops of tanks move).

EDIT: Sold these, rapidly had a few interested buyers so probably could have sold them for a bit more but did well and have some money in Paypal again for buying trains.

Ok this is not a locomotive, neither a car or some pieces of equipments in N Scale, but I think it belong to this thread...

Didn't buy a bunch of new stuff last week.

Did pick up another Amtrak engine/3 car set as one of the cars from my original set got busted up from a fall to the floor. Couldn't find the individual car, so bought another set. I have some spares now at least. Have some stuff coming sometime this week, and who knows what I might get next.

Per promise when I started the thread here are the lots I purchased earlier this month... This is the rolling stock (after a number of hours of repairs / reassembly), the lots also included 2x Athearn Big Boys w/ DCC & Sound (I am still working on getting them to run) and a Kato NW2 w/ DCC (Southern). I just sold the military stuff and almost broke even on the lots (although any money in just goes back out for more trains). I will also sell the Rio Grande Passenger cars and maybe some others. Waiting for a pretty large order of parts from MBK so that I can replace stirrups and brake wheels etc... on a bunch of units.

Another order from earlier this month were some Japanese Engines. I have been looking for a DD51 Switcher (I have a DD13 and they are cool little center-cab switchers so this is their big brother) as well as a Super Slug D51 (that completes my D51 collection). The DD51 came with a couple of other diesels different than what I have and I also went ahead and added a C50 steam engine (the one I had was missing the front plate / plow so I wanted to see if I can copy this one) -- when shipping from Japan might as well get a few things at once.

Mac, you plan to keep all these or sell some off at train shows, eBay, etc. and keep the ones you want? That's a lot of rolling stock.

    I know -- more than I expected!

I sold the military stuff and will sell the Rio Grand Silver Passenger cars. I can use the Kato/Con-Cor tankers and MTL Tankers as well as 3-bay covered hoppers << I would like to try to trade to reduce duplicates (i'd prefer a collection with one of each roadname / logo / style car). I think I will probably keep the bulkhead and center-beam flats with loads as well as any other flat cars including the articulated ones or the bridge one (eventually I would like to make custom loads -- that looks like fun). I have been looking for some old-time passenger cars so will keep those (although they are not my ideal roadnames they match some of my old time steam engines -- may trade if option presents itself). I have too many boxcars so need to go through these and what I have and sell off a bunch (e.g., I do not need 6 New Haven box cars).

This was actually 3 lots all from the same seller. Very good price although there were/are some issues -- e.g., they were all just thrown in 6 boxes / drawers (the things they are in for the picture) and the whole drawer was wrapped w/ bubble wrap (so lazy / irresponsible). So they had a tough trip and I spent hours putting them back together (that is also why I have $100+ worth of MTL parts coming from MBK). They also have green or purple paint on the bottom and (annoyingly) in some cases on the ends or doors -- check out the door on the railbox car in middle top.

Recent purchase, from ebay. Paid nearly MSRP for it, but this one is a lot harder to find than the Amtrak or VRE sets... I need to figure out what else I need to "complete" this set. I have this and the Metra bookcase set, so I think the other two MP36Hs and the three FP40s are the obvious option, but I'm thinking there's at least three or four individual Metra cars that Kato did as well.

Still torn about going ahead and taking the plunge on the new Kato UP E units and associated set, or waiting a little bit. I know the UP 1943 SD70ACe is supposed to come out this month, I figure I might go for that one since it'll be hard to find in the future.

If that ACe is out for the first time, I think you're right - it may get scarce fairly quickly.
UP E9s and CoLA are already out there and a new batch will probably last a while.

Here is some of my loot for my birthday. I have a wife that really loves me. I picked up a Bachman Baldwin 4-6-0 I just couldn’t pass it up for the price it was going for at Model Trains and Stuff. It has great slow speed control. You always need some more cars to go with the Locomotive so I picked up an Atlas 55 ton fishbelly hopper and a MT Baby Ruth refer car. I also picked up some detail parts from Model Tech Studios.

    Default Rollin' into August!

So, I mostly bought freight cars and a few parts this month.

    0810182033.jpg
These were some super cheap (mostly Bachmann) rolling stock with missing wheels, etc. Most of these I paid only $2-3 for. The grey Rock Island hoppers will get paint patches and DM&E decals, to flesh out my primary DM&E fleet. I'm going to let the paint be kinda obvious (not color matched grey), to make these look like obvious repaints of ex Rock Island rolling stock. On my fictional line, Rock Island survives their bankruptcy, and sells off a few lines and rolling stock to downsize, while making deals with regional railroads, like CNW, for discounted rates on other lines, in exchange for discounted rates on their own lines for those roads. I don't know how realistic such a thing is... But it gives me an explainable excuse for Rock Island, CNW, DM&E, and IC&E to all be seen on the same rails, and for ex-Rock Island cars to still be rolling on DM&E, IC&E, and CNW consists. Don't I have an imagination...

I also picked up some plastic pier girders, a random cheap house, a bag of wheels, parts of a passenger car with power pickups that will go into a camera car, and parts to rebuild my original Bachmann F9 Chessie System locomotive. It's got cracked drive gears, so I got some new trucks, as well as a 5 pole motor with flywheels. I'm gonna mill out a space for the flywheels and hope it all fits (that or buy a new chassis). The "fictional" Chessie F9 will fit right into my "Unfallen Flags" theme. LOL

    0820181805c-1.jpg
I have officially purchased my first ready to roll DM&E rolling stock! I have no idea what brand that POTACAN is (I can't find any markings at all), but it is exquisitely detailed! The brake hardware is all separate parts, and there are individual lines underneath. It was also weathered! it came with the ExactRail DM&E three pack. Not a bad deal, I might add! I added the pair of Rail Box boxcars cause I see them frequently as well. The MN Soybean Processors hopper was purchased cause it fits right in with the local freight. Their facility is right down the rails from the Heron Lake BioEnergy plant, which will get modeled on my layout as the big ethanol producer. MNSP will be my bio-diesel and feed producer... Oh boy... I see on Google Maps satellite view that they have a small switcher onsite... I'm gonna have to get a photo of it. I wonder what type it is? It's one of those short ones that's got a taper near where the longhood meets the cab.

There's also some other rolling stock that's not arrived yet. Mostly a few more Rock Island and generic grey hoppers to be used for DME repaints. There's also a 4-8-4 Bachmann on it's way that I got just to screw around with and tear up. It's one of the bad old ones, but I didn't get it to roll. I got it to be cheap, satisfy my curiosity, and maybe serve as a static museum display someday. If I ever want a 4-8-4 to roll... I'll get one that don't suck! If I ever get a proper steam loco to run, it'll probably be built up in Chessie Steam Special paint.

This was kind a random purchase for me. These railcars are not properly decaled because they were a promotional giveaway from the 1970s. These were given to doctors by Syntex for prescribing "Anaprox" branded Naproxin Sodium, back in the days before it became an over the counter drug here in the USA. As someone very grateful that Naproxen Sodium exists (oh, those aches and pains... ), and someone who works in the testing lab industry, this is relevant to my interests. The company is originally based in Mexico City, and had facilities in Palo Alto. They originally developed and produced Naproxen Sodium. Industrial Bio-Test Laboratories (IBT Labs) was an Illinois testing lab that was found guilty of committing gross fraud and scientific misconduct when they fudged test results to be more favorable for certain customers, one of which was Syntex. After IBT hired a former Monsanto toxicologist in 1971 to oversee testing on Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) some results started showing up... strange. Irregularities were discovered in IBT's data when a Syntex whistleblower called out the bad data being passed between the two companies, and passed it onto the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1976. An investigation went on from 1977-83, and discovered that as much as 71% of their results were potentially fraudulent! Just as despicable, both the US and Canadian governments concealed the list of 106 affected chemicals, whose safety testing results were deemed unreliable!

Fortunately, a Canadian newspaper was able to acquire a copy of the list and made it public.

I work at a testing lab as my main job. I'm not high up there, but I take integrity seriously. Places like where I work are what keeps people safe from contaminated foods and products. If we ever got lazy, people could suffer. It can't happen. The story behind the company that commissioned these old railcars from Bachmann for use as a promotional giveaway to doctors made a few twists and bends to uncovering the dangers of PCBs, something that's still an issue to this day! That's why I had to snag them!

Roche now owns what was once Syntex, and still has facilities in Palo Alto. Since Rock Island will serve as my interconnection to the south, and UP as my connection west, I figure I could have either one haul the Anaprox cars, though i'm trying to figure out who serves Palo Alto. I'm leaning toward UP. based on current knowledge, but on my layout, Southern Pacific would still exist (and ATSF, and so on). I'm not sure, but I think Southern Pacific once served Palo Alto (they had a station, at least). I'm not sure if they would have connected into UP, or if they would have connected into ATSF, or if they reached far enough to make a connection to Rock island... Those are the big questions, and that would determine who carries my Anaprox cars in from off the map...

Now the hopper and tanker are obvious choices for use in manufacturing Sodium Naproxen, and the two boxcars would serve well for product distribution. I even snagged a second tanker. The only thing that remains is... that gondola... What do I even use that for? I can't think of what they would need to haul in that one... hehe, I'm open to ideas! The last big thing... would be marking the cars with proper numbers and such. A few decals might make them look a bit more roadworthy. I couldn't find any road name using the letters SNTX, so I suppose that might work. Just have some low road numbers to go below SNTX. I'm pretty sure I've seen and passed over generic letter and number decal sets I can use to do that.

Just ordered the Woodland Scenics Town and Factory set, 13 of their buildings for 99 bucks from Model Train Stuff. These kits are usually about 22 bucks or so each in Canada. A nice drive down to New York State for groceries and train stuff will be on the agenda in a week or so.
