Default UP in western Iowa while on Christmas vacation.

Went to the family farm for Christmas this year, and had to watch some trains! It was painful, but I managed! So here's going to be some video's and pics! Got his first train well after dark, tried a video, camera couldn't handle it.

Then, on a later date, between Grand Junction and Ogden, this train was getting fueled up on the main! A second train was right behind him, waiting. Wierd.PIC_0859.jpgPIC_0861.jpg
Just before that, I did catch this westbound coal empty blasting by me at Grand Junction,

    More to follow.
Northern Pacific and Black Hills RR in N, of course!!

My dad's from Junction. His dad was the agent and worked the tower there for a long time.

kalbert - That's purty neat! Tis a small world.

Just west a few miles from there is Ralston, IA. Two sidings and an elevator seem to be the major reason the town still exists. Saw another coal empty blow by fast!

And then, as we travelled back towards Glendive, MT is Glidden, IA. There is an elevator there, with no rail service, but the trains still zip past it, like this westbound did.

Spent nearly a half hour waiting on the train here at Carroll, IA. The city gained possession of the depot, CNW, and rebuilt it into the CofC. It is excellent to see it in use. I spent some hours as a kid waiting for trains here, watching an old GP-7 or SD-7 in use as a switch. At that time the turntable was still there just west of this depot, with a small wooden roundhouse. The CGW was also still there then, too, never did see any of their stuff. Probably late night only by then.
