I just went downstairs and pulled them out and measured mine and they read 0.540".
They're installed in some MTL trucks with no slop.
That's interesting. Did you buy 'MTL 003 12 020'? That's what I bought and the back of the package states 0.530" axle length.

Another bit of input from Fox Valley - I inquired about all their 33" 0.540" wheel sets being on back order and the reply was: "The wheels were caught up in the factory closure this past fall. We have a new source and they are in production - first batch is expected in late March or so."

No clue, I seen them on the shelf, picked them up, took them home and later installed them.
No issues. I assumed they were made by MTL for MTL cars. What I installed them in/on were one of the new MTL Air Slides and the rest went into random cars with MTL trucks. The one I measured was the Air Slide.

My guess is that it's the latter. The owner of FVM also has a young child who is suffering from a serious congenital heart condition, IIRC.

Thank you, @rreitz! First for the info and second for doing the legwork.

I wanted to upload an image but keep getting 'upload failed' when using the 'Insert Image' option above. Is there a hold period for newer members? Thanks.

I found this photo on the bay, and the pack does indeed say "0.530" (13.5mm)". The pack for the standard plastic wheel-sets states "0.538" (13.7mm".

That's weird, Ron... I just replaced a couple of MTL plastic wheelsets with FVM .540" wheels (yes, on backorder, I still have a couple left from a 100-axle-pack I bought years ago) and I also tried some Atlas-for-MTL metal wheelsets (ATL-22133). Note both Atlas and MTL only seem to have 33" wheels, FVM has both 33" and 36" and most modern cars should actually use 36" (per the prototype, don't just follow this number without checking coupler heights etc.)
