Default Loco not running well (Slow in Forward)

    Hello All,
Just getting back into the hobby after a 20 year hiatus and my skills are a bit rusty. I have a used Kato GP-38 (Model 176-014) that does not run well. It runs great in reverse but only at about 1/4 speed forward. No chattering or stuttering just low speed. It also seems to heat up pretty quickly while running forward and not nearly as much in reverse. Could this be a brush issue? I have my doubts because I would think it would run poorly in either direction. I plan on tearing it down tonight and giving it a good cleaning. Any other suggestions?

this loco has a reputation for being fussy. this is from how hard it is to assemble/align.

    the magnets are old.
and quick motor heating is often problems on the motor shaft OR weak magnets.
Add thin oil on the motor bearings and run it free to see if it heats up.

look for thickened oil and grease in the trucks and general look-see.
it is not uncommon to have cracked gears so look for them.

I hate to poke you with 'go spend YOUR money' ...
however, I suspect you will find the more recent Atlas gp-38s to be a worth the price.

Clean and align and test your Kato before you seek a new unit.

I appreciate the links they are very insightful. I did have the loco disassembled. Nothing was binding in the worms or trucks. I did clean and re-oil things. I took the clips off that hold the brushes in place but was unable to get the brushes out. In all honesty I did not try very hard. I took the clip off and removed the spring. I turn the motor over and rapped it a few times in my palm but the brush did not fall out. Any ideas on how to actually remove them? I reassembled everything and it runs "better" but still not great.

    ... tap harder?

the without a doubt way is to remove the brush box from the magnet
then you can push the brushes out from the inside.

the lack of ease for removing the brushes does imply there is a problem to be fixed.

and while you have the motor apart clean the armature commutator.
