    Default Broadway Limited #3073 PRR M1a 4-8-2, #6720, Paragon2 Sound/DC/DCC

    Looking at this loco/tender for my door layout but,,, itís over 10Ē total length. Is that kinda long for an n scale loco? It would just start to roll and be at my first curve. What do you think?

    The M1 has a tender about the same size as the engine. This was to allow for a large coal and water load.

    It is a bit long for a steamer but it's TRUE to the prototype

    Yeah its tender length puts it up near the length of a Challenger or Bigboy. I will post of shot of that when I can.

    I am happy with my M1. It is a little sensitive to dirty track compared to my other steam but otherwise is my second best runner. Only the Kato FEF is a better runner than it. It tracks well on the 15 inch radius curves of my branch line and has only a minor wobble with the #5 Atlas turnouts as well.

    I have a M1a too and absolutely love the engine. It is long...but the details, sound and how it drives are just fantastic IMO. I personally will say to go for it.
    Similar to what Digital says...IMO the only engine I have that is equal to it's performance would be my Kato FEF. You cant go wrong with this engine.

    I was wrong about the length of an M1 compared to a Challenger or Big Boy. It really isn't close to the same length.

    Going from top to bottom is a Challenger, M1, Big Boy and FEF. The M1 is shorter than the FEF and noticeably shorter than Challenger and Big Boy.

    This does come as a benefit to the M1. Here is the M1 and Big Boy on a 15 inch radius curve. The Big Boy overhangs a lot and the M1 only a little. Operationally both run just fine on this curve. Visually the Big Boy looks over sized for the curve but that M1 doesn't.

    Here is the side view of the same curve. The M1 doesn't feel out of place on this radius of curve. Hope this helps give a feel for its size.

    I really like what I have read about this locomotive. I will spring for the bucks for it when the time comes. I am progressing on my layout design, but struggling to keep all the mainline curves at least 18" Very glad for the pics Digital posted and a thank you is offered. One curve through a tunnel complex would make my design and life much easier if it was at 16". I think this loco will be smokin' on my layout. No pun intended.
