That was fast, didnt they just start this project in 2014? UP must be loaded with $$$ to have that much extra money for a project that probably wont see a profitable return that quick.

Moose think they start 2013, but still seems like a fast rebuild project ... ... ... Hmmm, oil-fired Big Boy? Moose mean, she was built to haul nothing but coal, sooo, ummm, seems sacreligous...

I'd say there's about a 90% chance that we'll see a Kato version of that bad boy in the not too distant future.

Looks like they started the project in 2013 according to Wikipedia (take that with a grain of salt)
Here's some more info on it:

I was lucky enough to get to see the 4014 when they dragged it through Vegas in 2014.

    Can you imagine 4014 double-headed with 3985? ... I can.

It's a huge marketing opportunity as well. This loco will be on the mainstream news due to the 150th anniversary. Of course, not many companies in the world have retained the same corporate identity for over 150 years.

I've been thinking about that too. They did try oil-firing once (#4005), but the test was abandoned due to uneven heating of the firebox.
I'm not sure what has changed since then ... except time. Seems risky to go all-in on it now, but hey - the overall logistics may be easier, as both 844 and 3985 are oil fired.
    Time will tell.

Looking forward to seeing her run by her own power anyway. Never thought it would happen in my lifetime.
Hopefully I'll have a chance to visit some day.

Rebuilds are fast when you have paid staff working 40 hour weeks. Most of the rebuilds out there use a lot of volunteer hours.

from reading about oil firing, there are some technical issues involved
with some kinds.... burners being level and proper spacing were what got mentioned.

and that it takes a little tinkering to get that kind working properly.
and that propane has similar issues.

if one reads between the lines... it takes some one who knows the ropes
to get it right the first time.

I can give you pointers on an alcohol fired loco, I do not know the
    standard methods for burning oil...

Just seen this tonight, a 16 min video of 4014 outside of the house under fire.
Seeing this reminds me when I was waiting to see Jurassic Park for the first time, couldn't wait to see the dinosaurs walk.

Long and kind of boring video but it's cool to see her breath.

I'll never see it in person, but I'm hoping to catch someone doing a live broadcast someday.
