Question Lifelike loco running sporadically in reverse

Just received 2 used LifeLike Alco PA1 A units. One of them tests just fine. The other one runs smooth in forward and the headlight works. When I put it in reverse it moves very sporadically and the headlight flickers. I cleaned the wheels and that seemed to help a little. I know it must be electrical, but why does it run so well in forward? How can I fix this? Thanks

Is there gear issues? I would disassemble and clean them both.
