    Default Reducing locomotive start voltage

    I've reached the limits of DCC programming (at least without replacing a ton of decoders) so my short question is this: What can you do, mechanically, to have a motor turn more freely and reduce the starting voltage?


    Longer explanation: I have a lot of momentum on my units and while most of them are fine, I have a number that won't start moving until 10 or 15 seconds after I've hit the throttle. I believe this is because it starts its momentum from 0V as opposed to the higher-than-usual starting voltage I have set in the speed table. The effect s made worse when reversing, since it stops, decelerates to 0V, starts from 0V again, and finally starts moving 20 seconds later.

    easiest way, replace the motors.
    use 6 volt motors....

    harder is to improve the bearings (all of them)

    re-gearing might have the effect you want....

    tough problem to fix.

    As an experiment try zeroing out CV3 to verify momentum's involvement.

    I've done this with diesels: take off the shell so you can see the flywheels turn. Smooth as the flywheels are you can't see if they are moving, so get a felt tip pen and put marks on them every 30 degrees or so. Then check your lowest speed step and see if the flywheel truly moves at that speed. Once you get it moving real slow, the next question is: does it turn smoothly at really slow speed, say 4 rpm, or does it jerk around? If it hesitates the same place every rev, the problem is the motor, brushes, or bearings. If there is jerking at a slower rate than the motor's revolution, then the snag is downstream - the gears in the gear tower.
