Default Athearn Big Boy 2019 re-run

    http://www.athearn.com/Products/Defa...rodID=ATH30206

Right, so catalog #30206 is an excursion version with the tender from 3985.
Other than the obvious coal/oil difference, what is the difference between the tender from 3985 and 4014? Same type of tender?

Or to put the question differently: once 4014's tender is converted, will it look anything like the model? I'd hate to buy 4014 now with a "2019 prototypical" tender and end up with a model that is not correct for the years to come.
(yes, I know the future is especially difficult to predict and I don't think the UP steam crew will build the tender from the looks of Athearn's model, but you know what I mean)
(and yes, I can look at pictures and I am certainly going to, but I'm slightly put off by a model that I know will change soon).

Their announcement didn't make much sense to me. #30206 is as you state, and the only apparent difference between that model number and "ATH04014" is that there is the chalk 'big boy' on the smoke box.

The only think I can think of is that they don't want to do a speculative 4014 tender and end up having a model that's quite different from whatever the 4014 tender ends up looking like.

I'm not sure what differences there are between the tenders; I believe some of the later 4-8-8-4 tenders had an extra 1,000 gallons of water but I don't know if there was any external differences.

Thanks. I've decided to wait for the post-3985-tender version. A gamble perhaps, but as they feel bold enough to release a "Promontory" version, I'm sure they'll release one with the correct tender when the time comes.

And I agree - it's fair enough that they don't release a speculative 4014 tender right now.

I'm content to wait for the Kato version in 2021. My 2017 Athearn Big Boy did not make me happy

Is that officially announced? I saw the poll result, but polls are just polls

It's actually paint, meant to look like the original chalk, right? Otherwise all that chalk dust would have been blown away by the wind by now.

I'm sure someone will make a 2019 4014 "Big Boy" nose decal for those who bought the early runs.

I don't think there's been any official announcement, but that's what Kato reps at NSE Chicago are saying.

Hmm ... well, @Spookshow, your notes on the 2017 model are duly noted, so I'll see what happens.
My Athearn Challengers are fine, and so is the Kato FEF, so I don't really have a bias either way.

    Thanks

On the prototype? I should imagine so, or at least chalk with perhaps some sort of fixative?

about Kato and them making a big boy...
It is hard to think they won't make one.

in other words I think Kato will make a big boy.

I am far more curious about whether I'll get one.

The folks over at TRW indicate that Kato is planning a 2021 date... said at the t-track dinner, apparently.
