Default How many of you are going to pre-order the Athearn Big Boy?

I was thinking of pre-ordering one myself but I have no experience with Athearn N Scale locomotives. This will be a very pricey purchase so I was hoping to get some feedback from you folks on Athern locomotives. Here is a link to one of the DC model Big Boys. https://www.trainworld.com/manufactu...omontory-4014/

This one is pricey enough at $340 but the ones with DCC and Sound are even more so at about $425.

Yes. At the NSC in the summer. They gave a date (more like year) of 2021.

I'm done preordering anything, but I may get a Big Boy eventually. I have two great running Athearn Challengers.

I have both of them, they are great runners, not any issue with them. Challenger is the oldest steamer DCC, was built with MRC, and have a remote for operating the sound in analog. I trow away the MRC long time ago, and i add a Soundtrax Tsunamy 750. Great locomotives.

Athearn has made the challenger and big boy before so probably nothing new except for decoder and excursion big boy but same mechanism and such, but I'll wait for Kato version also, if Kato does it , it'll probably be 500$ list but what about sound factory kobo? I'll buy it!

For those of you who bought the previous run of Athearn's Big Boy, did you have any issues with run speed or pulling power? I read a few comments on-line from people who say it didn't run fast enough and wouldn't pull very many cars.

I've had it with Athearn products. I've had nothing but problems with my Challenger. It now sits in it's box.

Despite the debacle that my last one turned out to be, I'm going to give Athearn another shot. But I'm definitely more excited about the Kato version.

Mark...............I just now read your review of the last one Athearn made and it sounded to me like you were pretty happy with it. Can you elaborate on the problems you had with the last one? http://www.spookshow.net/loco/athearn4884.html

Since I am a DC guy, it also sounded like these previous engines had a way to get sound with a DC layout............is that correct?

Yes, the sound works on DC as well as DCC.

There's a lot of stuff on that review page, so perhaps you missed this bit about my misadventures with the 2017 production run -

I ran into a rather vexing problem with one of mine (one from the 2017 production run) that I was never able to fix. Here's the deal - as I normally do when I get a new locomotive, I spent several hours running it around in circles in order to break in the mechanism (first in forward, then in reverse). Well, everything was hunky dorey after the forward part of the process. However, within seconds of switching it into reverse, the crank pins on both sides of the rear engine popped out of their driver holes. And as annoying as that might be, the fact that it's virtually impossible to get said pins plugged back into the drivers definitely added insult to injury. As near as I can tell, the pins are squared off on the ends and the holes in the drivers are also square. But for whatever reason, I was never able to get them seated properly back in their holes (IE, they would just pop right out the minute I put the locomotive back on the track and gave it some throttle). So, ultimately I had to just send it back to the manufacturer (twice) for repairs - something I rarely have to resort to. Unfortunately, Athearn never was able to adequately repair it for me and I finally just gave up on it.

Mark............thanks for pointing out the issue concerning the crank pins. I wonder how many others experienced the same issues with crank pins in the earlier production runs and if Athearn made any production changes to address it.

Right now I am on the fence as to whether to pre-order one or not based on that issue. I really want to add a Big Boy to my layout though and don't want to miss out on getting one when they are finally in inventory at retailers. Based on my Kato experience, I imagine that model would be reliable but who knows. Just the same, your review (except for the crank pins) on the Athearn Model was very positive.

From what I've read, people have had lots of problems with the 2017 run of big boys and challengers. My guess is that Athearn switched factories and the new factory dropped the ball, but that's just a guess. I've owned models from all of the various production runs and only had the one bad experience.

It is pulling a lot. I do not have a film with Challanger looking like a snake biting his tail. Just this one:
    https://youtu.be/lW--LEKI1XA
I bought the model in the 2009-2010, i did not like the MRC decoder, even fitted with remote control for analog operation. Discard it and mounted a Soundtrax TSU750 decoder. Did not have any issue with this one or Big boy.

Pre ordering is fraught with danger in my opinion. I'd rather wait until the train becomes a reality and is on the shelves so to speak. Either way though, I also prefer to wait for Kato's model if I were to get one.
