I have one, i can not say if is in the 10% good locomotives from 90% crap which Bachman sell, but this one it's amazing. Can pull 4 Athearn old cars without problem, did not try because i do not have more. I mount Zimo sound decoder in tender. Run across my diorama without any problem. For excursion train i suggest KATO 9600.

And KATO 9600 without decoder, just brand new, on puling test of 7 pass. cars.

If it's to haul those Bachmann old time coaches then something like the Model Power 4-4-0 or 2-6-0 or Athearn 2-6-0 would be ideal and has my vote!

I am going to have to speak up in defense of recent Bachman steamers. The 2-8-0, Heavy Mountain, N&W J, 2-10-2, have been trouble free smooth running locos for me since purchase. Some I had to install DCC/sound in, while latest have it already. The cheap decoders in the 2-6-0 and 4-6-0 were replaced with Digitrax 123's, an easy fix for all that ailed them. While I run Kato, BLI, Intermountain, Concor, & MRC steam the Bachmans get their fair share of running.
Spookshow's reviews of them have been good.
I should point out that all the engines except the tiny guys now have ESU Loksound decoders installed and I think they're great.

I had two of those 4-6-0's. I wouldn't get another one. The first one lost the cranks and never would get much over a crawl. The other one right out of the box, would not go forward. It had reverse but the light and engine wouldn't go so i talked to Bachmann and they told me to send it to them along with 60 bucks and they would fix it. I have a dcc digitax dz123 sitting here that i was going to use with the 0-6-0 i have. I think i will save the bucks and fix it myself. Would i get anything Bachmann again...Not unless i have to. Same for Atlas! If once i get the two shays done that will be the last one for them too.
