His layout was featured on the cover of Model Railroader a few years back. IIRC, he said it was the greatest honor he'd ever received.

His layout has been in Model Railroader 4 times that I know of, December 2007 , December 2010 , Febr 2017 , June 2017. He also made a big contribution to the aid to the English club that was vandalized last year.

He is one of many stars past and present to have a Model Railroad , Frank Sinatra , Elton John , David Haselhoff, Gene Hackman , Bruce Springsteen , Johnny Cash , Phil collins , Roger Daltrey and many more.
As long as I can model in N-scale, I know I'm not old

Paul Newman, Michael Gross and Gary Coleman immediately come to mind too. I believe Curt Schilling of the Red Sox "bloody sock" fame also has been involved in the hobby and I believe there was a US President that had a layout in the Whitehouse too. I want to say Franklin Roosevelt but am not 100% sure of that one.

Come to think of it, it may have been Jimmy Carter... someone will come along to clarify shortly I'm sure.

A lot of my non-model railroader friends were sharing this article with me today. For most of us modelers, this is old news. I still have my 2007 MR cover story issue. Is the only difference here that the mainstream news media suddenly learned that Rod Stewart has a gigantic model train layout? Some sources that shared the article framed it as if Rod Stewart had finally "completed" the layout after many years. As most of us know, no layout is actually ever "complete."

Paul Newman and Gary Coleman are no longer with us, unfortunately. The one time I saw Gary Coleman in person was at the old Allied Model Trains store here in Los Angeles (also no longer with us). Michael Gross, happily, is still around, and not only is he alive but he's a VERY active participant in the model railroading community in Southern California. I believe he's a member of a couple clubs and he attends a lot of the local model railroading events in the area. He's also on one of the model railroading listservs I'm on and actively participates in the discussions. Many of the celebrities who are listed as model railroaders probably only have a layout because they're rich (and in some cases, hired someone to build it for them). Michael Gross isn't a celebrity who just happens to have a model railroading hobby; he's a model railroader who just happens to be a celebrity.

Little-known fact: FDR wanted to say, "A Lionel trainset under every tree" in one of his famed 1930's fireside chats. Aides persuaded him to change it to, "A chicken in every pot."

I bet it was FDR then that had a layout in the Whitehouse. I almost said I think it was a Lionel layout. I also intentionally said layout instead of model railroad because of that.

I also still think I remember hearing Jimmy Carter had a model railroad, but I don't think it was in the Whitehouse. I think it was at his home. I haven't spent a lot of time with the Google, but a cursory check points in that direction but neither confirms nor refutes it.

I've tried. They don't compute. All I get is a mental picture of Shaun Cassidy singing "Life's Been Good."

Hermann Goring was a model railroader too, I've heard. Not much into the postwar era, of course.

Makes me wonder tho, how many celebrities we hear about are big into model railroading like Rod Stewart or Michael Gross, and how many just owned a trainset or something?

Frank Sinatra had a separate building for his layout, and I believe Roger Daltrey has that too.

Truth be known, there are probably a lot of so called celebrities who are "closet railroaders" as well. I wonder how many (if any at all) females celebrities are into the hobby?

    A few I found include:

    Joe Di Maggio
    Bobby Baccaleiri
Mandy Patinkin (yep a guy evidently)
    Buster Keaton
    Tom Snyder
    Neil Young

And here is a fairly comprehensive list:
