Default N steam is dead !

Well, I took it upon myself to carry out a little survey here on nsn and discovered to my horror, steam is dead

I had a count up and saw that my daft silly shenanigans on Mars (two headed meese and all) gets more views than my 'amazing', and 'against all odds' (a very personal opinion here) Mallet build The Canadian Pacific Mallet build And when a two headed moose Life on Mars ! gets more 'thanks' than a 4-4-4 Jubilee Canadian Pacific 4-4-4 Jubilee, I have to admit the game is up for steam

So, in the interest of fame and glory, I will resign from the building of beautiful 'N' steamers and focus on more Aliens and Fairies.!!! I feel a certain affinity to Adam Smith's invisible hand* !!!

*I had to Google that one
    Thanks, Tom

    poor tom...

steam has been dead a while...

the ghosts and vapors do linger because as one man long ago said
it is a very alive machine.

I still grieve the loss for our world.
I think children should go to school in wagons pulled by steam traction
that they can know how valuable their education is
and see all the efforts involved in getting them there.

when it comes to n-scale and modeling steam...
it takes a fearsome determination to get the wee beasts to operate as they should.
(or a fearsome wallet...) I have found few how are in this hobby who
think Atlas and Kato Disesels are easy to repair, leave out a tune-up.

Steam models can be daunting because there is so much that is important to get right.

Kato leads the way with locos that fail the least often. and they are the easiest to fix...
buuuut I have not been able to convince anyone that I know about to
take up n-scale steam model tinkering.

the easy to fix and cheap models like Kato's hudson or the b-mann x-6-x locos
are good to learn the joys of cleaning and various upgrades and tune up procedures.

I have given up on getting n-scalers to seek sultan status...
I mostly hope to get the manufacturers to build good simple and RELIABLE model steamers.
That appears to be even harder than firing up a new steam tinker.

a steam update of my PRR l1... the chassis sounds like a gas turbine and I have to find a way to
    get that noise outen there.

It would help If I didn't need to keep fixing past projects...
like a danged MP Pacific that popped a driver loose. there are others.

Rather than showing that N steam is dead, I think it's more likely your survey shows that quite a lot of nSn users are in fact aliens

    Hi Tom,

Don't be discouraged. You inspired me to create Daleks and Cybermen on my 3D printer...I already had Dr. Who's Tardis on one of my traveling NTrak modules.

I have a Northern, Pacific and 0-6-0 switcher on my Middle Plains roster. I wish manufacturers would offer engines without DCC and sound...just runs up the cost for me.

I'd like to build a smooth running 2-6-0+0-6-2 Beyer Garrett.
    Happy Modeling

It depends on if you are modelling in 1:148 scale or not.

Nope! Steam is definitely NOT dead!! I, however, have been on a hiatus from anything while getting my new place ready and stuff fixed up for use. This place was sooooo run down. Lots to do.

That said, my 4-6-2 languishes on the workbench where I left it this spring. As does my AC-12. Others sit idle on the layout, nary a diseasel in sight! Just waiting for the weather and then the move to put the trainshed here.......THEN the steam will be up front again!

Steam is way popular in Japan. Have been watching vids of steam there, wow!! Lots of activity! As in other places.

    Nope. Not dead.

As for your Jubilee and mallet builds, AWESOME!!!
Northern Pacific and Black Hills RR in N, of course!!

Ow guys, Thanks for all the support I was just a messin', as I found it rather amusing to see how freaky things get a good viewing

I am making myself finish the Mars expedition before indulging in my next oddball loco build Not far to go now.

@ badlandnp I can't wait to see more of your classic steam videos. Get off your backside and get that house sorted so we can see some more of your modeling

I sense a Moose2013, needing his Garrett fix. The CP did consider them but nothing came of it. Pity.
    Thanks, Tom

Me thinks that moose means we must ALL order a Garratt, or face the inevitable...

Come to think of it, it has been a few years, but meese have been sighted here along the Yellowstone river. Cousins of his? Or distant relations, thrice removed. Hmmm.

May have to order a Garratt just as an act of self-preservation!

Ummm, yeah, well, if someone made that in n scale (and lowered the price to a 3rd of what they're asking) then Moose might have to get one ... ... But they're not, so Moose won't ... ... Now pre-order a Hattons Beyer Garratt, no, wait, order two!

You may be putting your cart before your iron horse.

I've been checking out the Jubilee thread and i never even noticed any Martian thread (but now I might).

I could go for a garratt depending on the budget.

It sounded like a good idea at the time... too bad the caboose wasn't in on the plan.
