    Default Kato GM5 motor

    Good afternoon fellow N scalers.
My name is Renato and I'm new to this site.
I'm an N scale enthusiast and I have a question about the Kato GM5 motor.
I've acquired a GP38-2 version that uses this motor and it seems no where to be found for its replacement.
The motor that came with it is dead and tried to fix it, but no luck at all.
Does anyone knows what will be the best brand and size of motor to be used as a replacement?
Any help you can provide me, would be much appreciated.

Thank you and wish you a great day.

Hi Renato and welcome to the forum.

You could try asking Kato for a new motor.
If they don't have any, I would try NorthWest Short Line next.

it is the flywheels that make the motor hard to replace.
If you can remove the flywheels, then most motors will fit.
recent Atlas diesels and Kato diesels have the same motor dimensions.

I have motors from Kato's f units. as far as I know my flywheels
are not correct for your loco.

I also have to mention that motor do not fail much at all.
you are certain the leads have not disconnected?

Don't do this Renato until someone answers this question:

Can't you pull the motor and test it by connecting the motor contacts directly to a 9 volt battery?

    Hi Victor.

    Thank you for your response.
I did contact Kato and they stated it's out of production.
I will check with the other option here given.
    Have a nice day.

to move the loco, almost any motor for most Kato Diesels will work.
most of the Atlas diesel motors will also fit.

here is an e-bay item that I am pretty sure will fit
put your flywheels on it and somehow hook up the motor electrical leads...

there are others an this one is cheap enough to get a couple...

    @Reno64
As @Bronman stated have you tried using a 9v battery connected directly to the motor?
    Cheers!
