    Default Intermountain Railway Coupler Compatibility

Will the couplers on Intermountain Railway Company n scale cars couple up with 1970's era Kadee micro train rolling stock? Just getting back into n scale and am not familiar with coupler compatibility anymore. Thanks.

the majority of IMRC cars from the last 10 years or so have come with MTL couplers. Knuckle couplers should couple with any other brand of knuckles, some brands have a bit more difficulty getting them to couple

If the older, '70s era rolling stock has the older style Rapido couplers, then no. The Rapidos are the older square looking couplers. They are still common in Europe and Japan, but have pretty much been phased out in favor of knuckle type couplers in North America for the last couple of decades. If your older rolling stock has knuckle type couplers, then yes, they should work fine with Intermountain couplers.

If you do have a bunch of the older Rapido coupler equipped cars you can replace the couplers, replace the trucks (the whole assembly with the wheels, side frames and couplers), or have a "transition car" or two that has a Rapido coupler on one end and a knuckle coupler on the other.
