    Default Track laying circa 1900

I found this interesting You-tube clip on track laying. Worth watching. And some early eastern state steam, including taking water from a trough between the rails.

Grueling, back-breaking work. No wonder so many of them drank.

My maternal grandfather, whom I never knew as he died before I was born of tuberculosis due to mustard gas exposure in WW I, did this kind of work but then became a foreman and didn't have to do the actual work anymore. He was paid very well. My mother told me they had the only house with indoor plumbing in the small town they lived in.
