Default A sad story about Caboose, the hobby shop in Denver

    Stumbled across this tonight.
I am not posting this as a bash towards Caboose, but as something to be aware of and at ISE's (Iowa Scale Engineering) consent.

Thanks, Allen. Caboose's new socially-conscious business model apparently does not include paying vendors within the agreed-to contract.

Someone might say there are two sides to every story, and they'd be correct. Be that as it may, I believe Iowa Scaled Engineering's side without question.

This makes me sad to see these people degrade the name Caboose Hobbies in this manor. The original shop was such a great place to spend the day and find anything under the sun regarding model railroading. I could never get over the first time I went there and found the shopping carts left over from the former supermarket. At that moment I knew I did not bring enough money. Seeing as they are now in a new location I would have prefered they start fresh with an entirely new name. Not on my list of shops to support.

I remember walking into Caboose for the first time back in 1984.
It was like walking into model railroad heaven! It was better than candy store.

We spent over four hours there walking around in a trance and didn't buy a thing because we were too overwhelmed.
We went back the next day with a shopping list and walked out with a cart full of toys!
Most of which was made up of from impulse purchases, lol.

I'll have to see if I can a picture that my friend took of us at the front door with the shopping cart.

The high-falutin, preachy tone of this press release finally reaches its nadir in the first sentence of the second 'graph when Caboose tries to co-opt the history of its storied predecessor.

From all I've heard, Caboose comes nowhere remotely close to The Caboose. ...

I did. It made no sense to me. Like i understand something lack of a better term "political" is happening. But my brain just doesnt seem to grasp what is happening. I litrally feel like a dunce. It could be that i actually do lack the knowledge to understand what exactly is going on. that or my mind os so fried from all this covid bs that im running at the capacity of a 5 year old.
Or Ive burnt my candle completly at both ends.

From ISE: "Do not do business with Caboose in Lakewood, CO. They don’t pay manufacturers, they don’t fulfill customer pre-orders (or refund down payments), and they don’t communicate."

    Can't really make it simpler.

I think I clicked on the other link. HAHA i guess this is what happens when you work and deal with kids. Left with very little brain capacity to even think straight. I cant even remeber the last time I ran a train. I know I brought one last week when i started working at Train World PTY LTD in Australia. On trial period at the moment but hopefully it becomes a long term endevour

Shannon, to add some additional history, the original Caboose used to be a mecca and the ultimate LHS west of the Mississippi. Model railroaders would make wide detours during vacations just to visit it. From what was described to me and the pictures I've seen, you can spend HOURS just looking around. It was THAT well stocked.

Then ownership was transferred a year(?) or two ago. Whenever the transfer was, it was recent compared to how long it has been in existence. Almost immediately after the transfer, things went down hill for one reason or another. Then you have the article that Allen posted a link to above as a glimpse into what happened. I have seen inside pictures of recent visits by folks and it's barren with nothing much on the shelves.

The disappointment amongst all is how it went from a premiere train shop to pretty much nothing and how quickly it became that way.

A google search does not even show an active web site for Caboose Hobbies. Do they still have one?

If i remember right the new owners did not get rights to the name Caboose Hobbies which is why they call it The Caboose now. I could be misremembering but I seem to recall that was part of the deal

Thanks for the kind words. I know a few people in the hobby. But working at the store, I now and will eventually start to learn the names of the regulars. I can be shocking with names sometimes

Here is their web site which apparently is currently being developed. https://mycaboose.com/

I hope they get all the problems that were mentioned here worked out to everyone's satisfaction. Our hobby needs everyone to be successful and I hope that happens.

Living in Denver, I have been 3 times and never go back again. They are horrible and deserve to go out of business. They brought over the business from Caboose Hobbies when they closed a few years ago. Being a long time customer of Caboose Hobbies they basically treated me like sh*t the last I was in the store. Considering it was former employees opening Caboose this isn’t a surprise. Last time I was in the store, right before COVID hit, the shelves were bare and some lame ass excuse about inventory of supplies from Christmas. BS. I know what a failed business looks like.

The sooner they are out of business the better.
