Default What are you buying this month? February 2021

Looks like it's my turn to start off the month.

DR (East Germany) passenger coaches to augment my 18 201 train. The set is Arnold HN4191 and the funny thing is that every catalog picture and text about the set shows the cars in two tone green like the Minitrix coaches. However, on every real life picture of the set, the coaches are single tone dark green. I did really want them two tone green to match the Minitrix set, but okay - as far as I can tell, those particular coaches were painted dark green fairly soon after delivery, so ...
Besides, the Minitrix post office car is dark green and the red diner breaks it up completely, so it's going to be a nice consist anyway.

I'm running low on MR oil so I got two pens with (blunt) syringe tips.

Some spares from Kato. When I originally fitted an ESU LokPilot decoder to my GS-4 I was a little too ... um ... enthusiastic, so I need the front circuit board and tender pickups for it, now that I want to change to a LokSound decoder. Also a new set of drivers for my FEF-3 #838 which has a slightly wobbly run like my #844 used to have.
And - as long as I was ordering from across the pond anyway, I got some traction tires and screws.

I most likely will. I might need to change over from Russtrnmn to Possum Bayou. I do need some sort of possum avatar. Maybe get my artist daughter to make me one.
    They are pretty nice.

I found nine InterMountain reefers at a French dealer on eBay. Three of them have WP markings, which (to me) is a little unusual.
While PFE reefers are available in Europe, they're mostly found one by one, so getting these in the same shipment was nice.

Well, I received two early Valentine's gifts from my wife. One is the Walthers Hole in one donut shop and the other is Woodland Scenics old Chevy truck. Also I received my wiring kit, power distribution boards, and wire over the past few days. I have already started on the wiring of my layout with the yard totally hard wired.

With the other end left to finish. Then do the final wiring for the afterwards.

Trip to my LHS and a stop at Joann's. My LHS bought somebody's collection and most of it seems to be lower end stuff like old Model Power and Lifelike. I picked these two Model Power tank cars out simply because I have none on my layout and felt they will add some variety. I don't think there are any industries on the prototype that get tank cars so they will be limited to the through trains. Had to replace the trucks and couplers with Micro/Trains but I had some on hand. Medium Extension seems to look right. Paint because I never seem to have the right shade. Woodland Scenics White Water Highlights to use on a test diorama I am making for a stream. I don't think I have modeled water before so I built a little diorama to experiment. Somewhere on this Forum, I saw somebody model water with Mod Podge, so I am trying it and using the WS stuff on top. I don't want to use anything that will go on thick as I only have an inch to work with. Hence the Mod Podge from Joann's (Crafts store like Michael's and Hobby Lobby). I also bought the black paint pen there. I have two old Brach's Candy kits from Walther's that I am kit-bashing and the window "glass" have molded-in details that I am trying to paint. I read an old post where someone recommended using a paint pen for this so I will see how it goes.
Cheers all and stay safe! Maurice

I picked up some new power. Kato's EMD SD70ACe Union Pacific #1111 "Powered by our People". I really don't run UP, I'm a KCS guy, but I had picked up UP #1943 "The Spirit" a while back cuz it's so cool looking. Thought this unit would pair really well with it. They look great together.

I have those power distribution boards. Going to use them to route the power for my Tortoise machines through my control panel. Looks like a nice compact solution compared to traditional terminal blocks.

This is very interesting. What kind if things are you going to be using it for???

I built a Shapeoko II with a 13"X24" bed several years ago. The only thing I've cut on it is a set of 20.3 scale bigboy drivers out of aluminum using a free trial of MeshCam. I still trying to figure out what CAM program to buy.

    Have you considered FreeCAD ?

I have used it for my 3D modeling and while it does have its quirks, I've only encountered them when a model gets really really complex. I have no experience hooking it up to a CNC router, but a quick web search seems to indicate that some people have used it with a Shapeoko device. Since the software is free, you may find it worth a try.

This is a large scale (1:32) truck I made with FreeCAD ... or one half of it anyway. It printed nicely on Shapeways.

They work very well! I used the two on both sides of my layout. Then with an easy connect to bridge them together. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

I downloaded it 6 or 7 years ago, but haven't ever used it. I been using Sketchup Pro (2019) for all my 2D and 3D modeling for over 10 years. It works well for 3D printing and laser work and I can export any file I need for most CAM programs. It's the CAM software for the CNC router and mill that I haven't found anything that I like. Does "FreeCAD" have CAM built into it for mill and router work. The only CAD that I know of that does that is Fusion 360, and I can't figure out out to use it. Been using Sketchup too long and set in my ways.
