    Default Whatís your favorite code 80 flex track and why?

    Iím in the process of designing my layout. I will be using Kato Unitrack and some version of flex 80. Iím stumped on what brand to get. Ideally one that doesnít oxidize very fast. This is why I am calling on the folks here to help me figure this out.

    Eventually they all oxidize but Kato Unitrack has some secret sauce in their metallurgy that makes them oxidize less. But some don't like their built in "ballast" and the cost.

    At the end of the day it's a personal preference and availability depending on where you live.

    For me, Peco. I run modern European trains, so concrete ties are a necessity.

    Atlas code 80. I have on my diorama, not any traces of oxidation on it. But my diorama is stored in enclosed space. I clean it just for fun, 3 times on 10 years. I have a layer o Aero-Car conducta lube and is work for me. I intend to switch on code 55 next layout.
    I LIKE TO WORK WITH BIG SHIP ENGINES BUT I SPEND MY FREE TIME AROUND N SCALE TRAIN MODELS.

    I like how it bends and it just works for me

    Peco, although I would go code 55. The visible portion is code 55, however the rail used is code 80 and it fits easy to over code 80.

    A lot of the Atlas flex track/sectional track on my current layout is over 45 years old and it sat for four years in my apartment, unused. When I moved the layout here to the house, a few laps around the mainline and the trains ran perfectly fine.

    With most quality nickel silver rail, even though nickel silver rail does oxidize, the oxide is at least partially conductive and wears off with the passage of trains.

    Unitrack is now making their own flex track. Or has been for a while and is now marketing it in the US, I'm not sure which. I have no experience with that however.

    If not that - Peco. The tie spacing is similar to Unitrack, so the transition will stand out less. If the flex track is for sidings or spurs that might be lighter rail in the real world, you might even experiment with Peco code 55. It's made differently than most code 55 in that it is basically code 80 rail, with a different profile, and buried deeper in the ties. I haven't tried this, but I would think it would match up well with the code 80 Unitrack and give you an option for lighter rail for spurs and such.

    I'm using Atlas C80 flex track and sectional that I bought in 1997 in my latest layout. I haven't had any issues with it.

    I've always liked Atlas, mostly because it matches US tie spacing better than Peco, but also because I can get it locally. Currently using code 55 Atlas, again because of availability, but also because Peco isn't true code 55.     +1 for Peco C80. I used that on two layouts and I've been very happy with it. As others said, Peco C55 is essentially a double-flanged C80 rail buried in the ties. Even though the rail is C80, the visible rail height is C55. Also, the double flange design allows you to use regular rail joiners to connect it to any C80 rail (like UniTrak)


    Can't do much about oxidation. Track cleaning cars, NOOX, good power feed principles all help mitigate it.

    FWIW: Peco every time. I've used it for over 40 years and although during that time I DID try other brands (though only when I couldn't get Peco), these were never as good, and were invariably replaced by Peco when that brand became available once more.

    Kato’s flex track should be the same metallurgy and it’s pretty cheap. I get most of my Kato stuff from a store in Japan, 10pc of flex track is $26 US although I haven’t tried it myself
