Question Kato FEF-3 and DCC Question

Hey guys, I recently picked up a Kato FEF-3 and would like to install a DCC sound decoder. I had been looking at the digitrax SDXN146K4, but I've never used one of their decoders before. Does anyone know if it has decent sound quality? If the speaker is an issue, I could swap it out for another one.

Eventually I would like to install lights on the tender, firebox, and maybe mars light as well. I'm interested in doing all of that but I'm not sure how easy this locomotive is to work with. I thought I saw some pictures from someone who had done much of this work, but I can't seem to find it now. Also, does anyone have any decoder recommendations for that kind of a project?

Here is that post your looking for

I ended up replacing the speaker in the Digitrax unit with a sugar cube style speaker. Was a fantastic upgrade to the unit. Not sure you can add more lights with to it...As I recall the only way to add the MARS and extra lights was to use a ESU unit. So ya may need to look into that.

Overall it was a very easy install and speaker upgrade.

Thank you guys for providing those links. After reviewing them, I think I'll hold out for the ESU decoder and just go all the way with it once I'm settled. I'm really looking forward to the install, this will be a great project to jump into after a stressful cross country move!

Wise move- you have a $200.00 locomotive, you might just has well invest in a quality sound decoder!
