Default Micro Trains US Army SW9/1200

I have a MT SW9 from the MT US Army train set #2. It was evidently made by Life Like and is older and not DCC ready. The light board in it does not have the two wires as shown on TCS or Digitrax websites. My question is twofold.

    Can it be converted easily?

And if it is not easily converted.

Will the shell fit anything else?

The orange and grey wires shown here?

You provide those two wires during the installation. Looks like a fairly easy conversion if you follow their instructions.

Thank you. I did not see/find those instructions when I looked on the TCS website. I kept looking under Life Like and Micro Trains instructions which only show the later DCC friendly version.. As much as I hate disassembling locomotive, I'll do it for this one.

As near as I can tell, they did not change the shell when they did the DCC ready version of the SW......it still has the stupid metal wipers attached to it to transfer power from the trucks to the chassis. I only have one DCC version, and although I like the LL SWs, it took me 4 tries to get everything to work right and every time I pulled the shell it tore one of the metal strips off. Anyway.......if your question is "can you put your army shell on a DCC ready newer chassis", then the answer is yes.

I was also curious if the shell will fit any other brand of switcher. I have read that some have successfully used the LL/MY shell on a Kato NW2 chassis.

My Navy sw1200 rides on a Kato chassis, not perfect and the shell needs some modifications but if youve got the patience for the project it works

Just tried to put an old LL SW onto one of my Kato NW chassis........the cab flair on the Kato is way bigger(wider) than the LL. I don't see any way you could modify the shell to fit, although you might be able to modify the Kato Chassis by grinding. The hood end would fit OK if you pull the contact strips off the LL shell. There's also a BLI NW2 switcher out there that comes with a Paragon 4 DCC/sound decoder standard, but no idea as to whether your shell would fit that.

I'll look into going with a TCS decoder now that I know how to install it in the non DCC ready SW. I just need to practice up on my soldering skills first. Thanks to @kingmeow for the link.
