made another boulder , more shadowing painting on the rocks ...... and I have finally settled on this rock formation layout ... it only took me about 6 hours worth of moving stuff around until I saw what I wanted .

I made another rock formation for the front right spur going to the mines ... I finished the second tree foliage and spent some time sifting and washing gravel from my creek to use on the layout and found some sticks out in the yard to make more trees with .

You're making good progress. There are a few different ways of making conifer trees out there. Here's one I've used and like, and it uses bamboo skewers for the trunks similar to what you are doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wdSKMOV8dY

Or here's another option from our own @michaelrose55. Great results, but you'll need a static grass applicator (4mm static grass is used to simulate the small branches, giving the tree a nice structure). He uses store bought armatures, but as he mentions you can make your own instead. https://www.nscale.net/forums/showth...597#post347597

speaking of money , this is a budget build ... I have almost no disposable income so this is a lot more challenging to me because I dont have the luxury of of big modeling budget.
here is a rundown of materials and cost thus so far :

    1. amish made oak shelf , yard sale $15
2.foam board - free salvaged from jobsite
    3.2 tubes white glue $2
3.various acrylic paints- already had , bought 2 extra bottles of brown @ .50 each
    4.kato rh turnout $20
    5.kato lh turnout $22
    6.kato cv1 oval track kit $22
    7. pwm dc controller board 2@$8. ($4)
    8.led light bar w/remote $12
    9. wire - free scrap
    10. acrylic caulk $1
11.pebbles and ballast - free , found materials
    12. sticks , scatter - free , found materials
    13. pack of scrub pads - $1.35
    14. kato 8" straight track piece -$ 2.50
    15. super glue gel - $2
    16. sponge for scatter is free , I reuse my old dish sponges ( yes dishes still get done by hand around here )
I'm not counting tools or equipment because I've had all that for years . $104.85 total cost for layout not including Loco or cars . not too bad ... I feel like I could have gone even cheaper had I used flextrack and made my own turnouts .

I try make the best of what I have to work with , its starting to look better ..but still lots of work left . I've been having lots of fun running it eventhough it's not done , I got a long piece of track I connect to the spur for a fiddle that extends off the layout .

I glued in a bunch of pebbles on the mountain ledges which I purposely left flat for doing such . once they were in place the color contrast was to varied for my taste so I painted all the pebbles in to match the mountain.

Then Ricky b and the boys came over from the yard and we did a little wheeling in the transfer truck .... yeeehawwww !

getting low on supplies ... I made more scatter this morning out of minced dish sponge and paint and it's currently drying .

also made more ballast with my hi-tech ballast making machine I cobbled together . anyone want to trade some of this sifted washed ballast for some metal wheeled trucks ,old dc locos that can't be converted to dcc or other items PM me , it's a mix of chert, flint, limestone and marble and I have an unlimited supply as well as graded 1:160 scale boulders . I will be posting this in the for sale / trade area also .

started gluing in shrubbery in between the little rocks , this is tedious but will make or break the mountain I feel like so I'm taking my sweet time . 20220820_191613.jpg

I added lots of dried roots from dead sweetgum trees I had picked and dried months ago . nothing is glued in yet , still experimenting with placement . some of the dried roots I used for dead standing trees I bored a small hole in the bottom of the trunk and superglued a stiff small wire into it for easy movements. 20220822_183703.jpg
