Funny, I was just talking to someone about this today. I have never seen one other than a live steam (ran off steam power) unit. This was a 'one off' production piece that was at the very least impractical.

There is no room inside one of these engines to allow for anything but what is necessary to make the unit function.

Sorry

see what I would think one would do to achieve this is house the parts that would make the steam in a separate car and then have a small tube transporting it to a stack out of the engine, I am looking for a train to put atop a wedding cake and thought it would be coll if it actually had steam coming out of it oh well - and I fear that an HO scale will make the cake seem small rather then the samll n scale making the cake appear large

Unfortunately, most mechanisms that create smoke/steam/fog effects rely on heat and evaporation. Sending the smoke down a tube would cool it and create condinsation which equals ... a mess.

It would be nice though if it would work.

But if you were interested in going "all out" (where "all out" means a lot of modeling), you could put a boxcar shell around a small engine, take the motor out of an N-scale steam engine and insert a smoke generator.

It'd be one heck of a hack, but you could use a cheaper steam engine because you aren't interested in the mechanism, put the smoke liquid tank in a car right behind the engine with the heater in the engine, and have a powered boxcar behind that...

Of course if this is going on a wedding cake, you might want to take an extra look at the MSDS for smoke liquid, and if you're going gonzo anyway, why not take a look at Z scale...

If it is for a cake, it is going to be stationary, correct?

Put an HO mechanism in a small box below track level (cut a hole in the top of the cake) and run a short silicon tub up to the stack... silicon over that short distance should avoid the condensation problem...
If you packed the engine up off the rails a couple of thou, you could power it from a small battery pack (same box as the smoker) hard wired to the motor to get the valve gear motion to go along with the puffing smoke... not having to shift any weight (just idle the wheels over) a small battery pack should run it for quiet a few hours...

This won't help answer your question, but I did have my bachmann consolidation smoke very briefly when my freshly installed DCC decoder fried, thanks to a poor insulation job on one of the wires by me.
One puff of bluish smoke out of the stack, then nothing. Oh well. Thankfully, Lenz has a great warranty!

There were actually some of the old Mallets (several folks released them back in the day and I think the MRC ones had this option) that had smoke units. They were pretty poor, but basically, it had a little metal 'bowl' under the stack that sat on the headlight bulb that heated it. They didn't have any mechanism to force the smoke out with the wheel revolution or anything, it just smoked.

I have never seen one actually smoking because they were built before I was born. By the time I saw one, we had no idea what to put in the little bowl that might smoke without lighting on fire or reuining the shell. But the mechanism was a smoke box as best we could tell. (Little metal bowl in the smoke stack that got hot when the light was on, what else would it be?)

Firma Seuthe makes smoke generators that are readily available at USA hobby shops. Also called Seuthe. That said, a Google search didn't turn up much that wasn't in German. Walthers carries them, but doesn't give size information. One of youse guys with a Walthers N Scale catalog might check and see if they are listed.

Having said all that - I think that to put one of these in a wedding cake locomotive is a fairly advanced project. I might do a different take on it and use a puff of cotton candy attached to the stack.

Christian, yes, page 340 of the 2004 Walthers N&Z catalog has SEUTHE smoke & steam generators listed...

Default steaming N Scale

MRC about thirty years ago made a Y6b with a built in steam unit.
The engine was the grandfather of the Rivarossi/Con-Cor Y6b.

There used to be a German protype steamer that had a smoke generator. I think it was made by either Arnold. There was one for sale on ebay recently. I might have been a 4-8-4 or something of that sort.
