    Default New to modelling

    Hello Everyone,

I am very new to modelling.
I have always been fascinated by model trains since i was a child... but unfortunately the availability of hobby train sets in India was extremely limited.

I have finally been able to start off my collection (in bits and pieces .. since the prices in India seem to be comparatively higher than elsewhere).
But i do look forward to building on this .. and will certainly be looking for a lot os advice and help.

Glad to be part of this forum
    Regards
    Rajandrav

    Default Hello all!

    Hello from Mars, Pa.
I have played with trains off and on for years. My dad's 1950's vintage Lionel. As a teen in the 1970's, the tyco HO stuff that went with our slot car set. Then when my wife and I had kids in the 90's, I got a couple N scale Bachmann sets that are still functioning along with a donated Aurora Postage stamp train (Santa Fe F unit with passenger cars).

Now, I'm in the initial stages of planning a largish layout in N scale using DCC (actually DCC++ driven by JRMI on PI). I've already gotten my hands dirty by adding a decoder to a Con Cor E8 that I picked up from ebay. I hope to use this site as another source of info and help on this journey. Maybe I'll learn enough to be able to help others as I learn.
    Thank you,
    John Zerbe

So, I found this site looking for a guide on swapping out the Kato couplers on a GG1 with MicroTrains...

My first run-in with model trains was my Dad building the layout from "An HO Railroad that Grows" in our basement a *long* time ago. I wanted to get into building a layout, chose to go with N Scale because I wanted to run LONG trains and started a layout on a 4'x8' sheet of homasote. Sadly, budget got in the way before I got anything to the point of even being able to run trains (and I was going for a rather large NTrak module...)

Then, got married, small house with no room for anything, now we're in a house with plenty of room for a layout (once we finish unpacking the boxes in the basement,) but I've got room for a shelf layout in my home office.

I'm going with DCC, have already installed my first decoder in an Atlas SD-60M, going to be installing a decoder in my Kato GG1, and at some point replacing the decoder in my Bachman DDA40X with a better model. The layout itself is going to be a small switching layout, based on industries around here, using Unitrack on foam-board on shelving. Unfortunately, the shelf layout won't let me run my "big steam" that I picked up recently, my UP 4-8-8-4... Or at least, not in any way except a "back and forth" down the straightaway...

Once I get started in the basement where I'll have more room, I'm thinking a double- or triple-deck layout, loosely based on the Lake State Railway with some trackage from the old, defunct, Detroit & Mackinac which I'm going to treat as an excursion line to explain running Big Boys, DDA40Xs, GG1s, and other classics. Plus, well, the D&M ran through the town my grandparents had a house in...

Default The interest just won't die

Morning, N-scalers. My name is Richard and my interest in N-scale and model railroading just won't die.

25 years ago I first became interested in building a layout. I had recently moved back home with my parents and was going through some health issues so model railroading was a great escape and I had the time. Once I got over those I moved out, got married, and we have two boys. About 13-14 years ago I decided to embark on a new layout, a 3x6, something manageable. But small kids and a career didn't provide much time at all so very little progress was made. I made a mistake which I now regret in selling all my Atlas engines and rolling stock. I did keep my Digitrax controller and Tortoise switch machines and a couple structures.

Several months ago the bug bit me again. My oldest son is a high school senior and will be heading to the Marines this fall. I've already called dibs on his bedroom (does this make me a bad parent?) for a hobby room. I love to fly fish and I tie a lot of flies, but I'd also like to build a smallish layout too. The hollow core door layouts really intrigue me, and it's amazing the technological advancements that have been made with DCC. I look forward to learning everything all over again.

Welcome to the greatest wee nscale forum on the interweb!

To answer your questions, you are not a bad parent for turning your son's old bedroom into a hobby room. Of course, if you had let your son go into the Air Force, you would have been a better parent, but Moose digress ... Welcome aboard!
