Another refugee from Atlas. N-scaler who is probably going to move in a year, so considering devoting some time to Z-scale.

Have read through some of the threads, and probably prefer this format, where there is one guy in charge who answers only to himself.

Was getting a little uncomfortable over at Atlas anyway. To have product requests referred to as "whining", even in joking, doesn't sit well with me.

Well, about me. 38 year old IT Professional, dad and husband from Nevada. My son and I started this back in Nov '03, believe it or not. So, we're still newbies to this hobby. We built a Terrain for Trains High Sierra layout. Great experience but next time will try to scratch build.

I've been a guest (lurker) her for a few months and a model railroader wantabe for about 20 years. Finally, in my midfifties, decided to readjust my priorities and jump in. In the real, read that working, world I'm a Professional Land Surveyor. I've been surveying property boundaries, highway and railroad right-of-ways and creating terrain maps for over 30 years. I'm now teaching the subject at a community college in Columbus, Ohio.

Those I've talked to about this hobby suggested picking a railroad and time period that I was interested in first. Then research that to influence how I put my layout together. The idea always stated was that this would help limit the type of equipment that I needed to make it look right. Guess I'm just a contrary cuss and had to go exactly the opposite direction with my prototype. The Ohio Central System Sothern Operations http://www.ohiocentral.com/ and http://www.ocsteam.com/. One person I talked to said if it fits on rails that railroad might have one. The Fallen Flags site listing for OC http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/oc/oc.html is just a sample. 9 Steam locomotives in the inventory as a beginning.

Not much to say about myself really. Been into railroading all my life since I was a babe (grandfathers, uncles, etc worked for PRR, PC and coal mines in PA). Been into modeling all my life. Been into nscale for about 7 yrs. I consider myself a medium grade modeler but I like it

Not quite as much traffic here as the Atlas board, so every new member and poster is important to us. Todd has done a great job with the features and links at this site, making it a nice launch site when you want to find out about N scale things.

A continuing growing membership will help make the forum section reach a critical mass when there will always be new topics and something to talk about.

I guess I'm another wanderer from the Atlas Forum. Have been in model railroading for over 50 years. I had a large O scale layout (1400' ) and a smaller HO scale layout (800') up North. I moved to Florida in 1994 and decided to go with N scale. My layout is 4x11' and it is all graded.

I am modeling Southern- Santa Fe in the transition steam - diesel era with a decided preference for steam.

I use DCC on my layout, using the Lenz system. I am into block control, feedback and signaling with the DCC.

I manage a family owned model railroad product manufacturing company (nscaleloads.com) and I model in both N and On30. I have found most forums to be a useful tool to harvest ideas and prototype information. Hence I will be checking in from time to time.

I'm JB. My wife, Judy, & I are building a layout (obviously N). I started about 4 yrs ago while still working. After retiring 2 yrs ago, I haven't taken much time to work on the RR. We have many interests and have let this one slip. I'm planning to get going again this fall. We live in NE IL (outside Grayslake) and enjoy outside activities this time of the year.

I build the bench & trackwork and Judy builds the structures. We have a dedicated room (12x13) with finished ceiling and walls. The benchwork is open so far, only a little scenery and an uncompleted mainline. I did build a 2 1/2 turn helix to change levels. 2nd attempt was a keeper.

There are a lot of HO'ers around, but haven't met many N-Scalers. We did go to the Foxvalley club meetings, but have since dropped membership in NMRA. I read NScale mag and have found some helpful hints in there.

I am getting serious about DCC and have been a "reading member" of several Yahoo groups on the subject. I see from the poll that the majority here use Digitrax. That was the way I wae leaning, until I saw articles about Rail-Lynx, but it looks like that isn't for "N".

I would appreciate any replies from users of DCC as to why they chose what they did & a note from anyone living in NE ILL or SE WI that would like to share ideas.

We hope you find this site useful. We do have many folks using DCC so you should be able to get a lot of help in that area.

I myself use Lenz equipement. I find it very easy to use and the warranty is the best in the business.

Well, since N scale discussion forums seem to be falling like flies this month, thought I'd sign up for yet another one and hope it lasts a while. First, Atlas shut down its forums until at least August, then the Model Railroad Forum on Gamers.com shut down last week, evidently along with the whole website. Yesterday, Trainboard and RailImages disappeared as well. Fortunately RailWire is still up, but does not appear very active, so I joined here as well.

I've used the same name, either thirdrail or third_rail (if someone already registered as the former) on every board, although I also used my name on the Atlas forums.

At any rate, the shutdown of RailImages is going to hurt all the forums. Glad to see some familiar names aound here. :wink:

I thought I might introduce myself; I'm 40 and living in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, about 300km east of Perth, with my wife and 2 young children (4 and 2). I am the town's GP (family physician).

I do not have a train set, but I do have a garden shed...

My last experience with model trains was when I was 15; my father built a HO Hornby analogue layout on a baseboard which could be raised by pulleys up to the ceiling. I enjoyed it for a short time, but was also developing an interest in girls/beer etc.

Anxious to avoid "missing the boat" with my own daughter and son, I thought I should contemplate a model railway before they have grown up too much.

My present persuasion is to have an n gauge DCC permanent layout in the shed, possibly hooking up a PC for added control.

My first research question is which track manufacturer's product should I buy? Has anyone compiled a review comparing cost per unit track length, realism in appearance, reliability and ease of electrical connections etc.?

I look forward to reading the posts.

Hello there - My name is Wade Hutchison, and I'm a 42 year old professional living in central PA. I've been interested in starting a model railroad for many years, but never had the space in my previous house. Two years ago, I bought a house with a large unfinished basement and began the process of finishing. Well, about the only thing left to go in this summer is the ceiling and benchwork for my railroad. I stumbled onto this site last week when looking for information on what track to start with. I thought I'd say "hello" and warn you that I'll have a bunch of questions. I'll start by asking if it's worth going to one of the Greenberg train shows? I can get to the July 31st one in Timonium, MD, but I don't really know if it's worth it? What can I expect at one of there shows?
