    Default New guy...well sort of..

    Hi,
My name is Harry Alban and I live in Grand Junction, MI, USA. I retired earlier this year and move to this area from the Chicago, Illinois area. My wife and I bought a rather large home situated on 15 acres and are in the process of turning this property into a horse operation specializing in Morgan horses.

Since Grand Junction is located in the Michigan snow belt (lots of lake effect snow), I've got plent of time in the winter for indoor activities. I've assembled and operate a combat flight simulator. I also like building scale models, particularlly 1:48 scale aircraft.

Now for the n-gauge stuff. I've built 2 layouts over the past 18 years. The first was a coffee table size and the second was double track affair about 5' x 8'. I planned on building a larger layout but was limited by space, time, bucks and 3 kids going to college. I did manage to attend numerous model railroad swap meets over a 10+ year period and amassed quite a collection of n-gauge equipment and supplies. Well, the basement of our new home is gigantic......and what's more important, it's all mine to use as I see fit. I plan on building a layout which will cover an area of at least 20' x 100' and could be bigger if I needed more room.

I've been "out of the n-gauge loop" for the past few years and see this website and community as a good way to get back into the swing of things, so to speak.

I'm looking forward to "meeting" all the member and hope that I can bring something to the table at some point.

    Thanks for listening,

    Harry (Ironhorse) Alban

    jb,
i'm in your general area and i thought i'd share some info with you regarding a local n scale club that meets 1st and 3rd mondays. email me at kebmo1@sbcglobal.net. i'm in lindenhurst and the club is just east of antioch. i sent you a private message, but if you're anything like me you won't be able to figure out how to get it. lol. what can i say? message boards have always baffled me. anyway, the man who hosts the club owns bob's hobby shop in lindenhurst. sadly, may 14th is their last day of business. not so sadly.........they have pretty deep discounts going on right now to liquidate the remaining inventory, so it's a good time to stock up on whatever you may need. better hurry though because it is going fast.
drop me an email sometime. i would love to pick your wife's brain regarding structure building. so far i'm sucking at it. they're just so small....................
one thing i learn every day is that i don't know very much......

    ironhorse,
Welcome to the forums...I am a newbie here too, but the Morgan horse comment caught my attention. I have always loved the Morgans, my grandfather kept a matched pair for light farming and buggy use. As far as the layout size...WOW! I am working on two layouts one very small for my Travel Trailer (Airstream) and a larger one for the home front. We have 40 acres in the Sandhills of NC and are setting up to board horses for a source of retirement income...and to pay for my train habit :P

Hey everyone! My name is Chad, I'm 22, and I live in Lexington NC. A few years ago I had a HO layout when I lived with my parents. Well we all know girlfriends will make you do crazy things. Two years ago we were married and I had to leave days of my layout behind me. The house we moved into was really cramped and small so no trains. Well here I am a few years later moved into a new house in June and the dreams of a new layout were implanted by a friend whom has always tried to convert me to N. Well it worked and I'm in the planning process of a free lanced short line called the Blue River Railway set in the North Carolina mountains present day. I hope to start the benchwork in a month or two. An L-shaped 5x4 and 28 in's deep.
Also we have a 2mth old daughter who you can bet will be brainwashed with colorful images of Thomas The Tank Enging. BEG.
    Just smile, you'll feel better.

Hi, glad to be here. I haven't modeled in about 10 years, so haven't checked out too many sites on the 'net. I have been involved in a few boards for classic cars - I own a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda - so I'm psyched to find this board. The last kid just left home in September and soon I'll be starting a new "empire".
I'm also excited about all the new technology in model railroading. I went to the WGH show in Denver last month and it blew me away. I'm looking forward learning from you guys.

Hey, I am Kevin. I guess I am a little late because I have already posted but here I am. Not much to say, I am a Norfolk Southern "fanatic" I am no crazy geek though just a regular guy looking for a hobby. I am at the young age of 18 out of highschool. Hopefully I will be starting my first layout in a month or two, just have to get the money coming in so I can buy stuff. I guess what draws me towards these massive machines is the power. This should be fun! :P

I have recently moved to the Boise ID area after leaving three basement layouts behind I am determined to not bolt anything behind. I have been in N scale since 1969 as an avid Santa Fe fan. I was a trainmaster for the Burlington Northern and part of the R&D team. I am planning an along the wall layout in a spare bedroom and am looking for benchwork options to help keep it form being attached.

    Welcome REDCAT !!!
I would suggest the basic L-girder method with the standard 2x2 legs and to keep it from the wall , on the backs of the benchwork , you may want to put some 1" thick weather strip foam. That will butt up to the wall but keep some outward tension on the benchwork.
