At the moment it's more about searching for trackplans, which system to start with etc

    I am absolute bloody beginner!
Thinking about starting with a small diorama like plate of about 20" x 10" to learn the basics of laying the tracks, modelling the scenic, wiring and so on

Hello Dave and Welcome. I take it we can call you Dave too ?

Now, you are going to have to tell us a little about what you plan to get up to, layout size, road name, era and most importantly (to me) Steam ???

Somebody will hopefully be along shortly to explain an unwritten rule or two

    Have fun
    Thanks, Tom

    Default New to this

    Hi all,

I am new to the hobby and am mainly getting into it for my stress relief and the grandchildren. I want to start with a small single train layout for a corner of my office and go from there. I had an HO set (just an oval from pieces gathered from everywhere) when I was young but haven't done anything for too many years. I want to do a steam passenger PRR train first because that was what my dad really liked; he worked on the railroad at one point in his life.

Welcome, Brian! That sounds like a good way to start. A small layout is a great way to learn modeling techniques, have some buildings and scenery, and relax.

How big do you want this corner layout to be?
    Cheers!

    @Anveo

Moose bid you hearty welcome to the greatest wee n-scale forum on the interweb!

There be rules here ... One, don't poke the bear, the moose, the sasquach, the Reach Police - oh, definitely don't poke them, the wombat, the Schmidt, and a whole pack a badgers ... Okay, Moose really needs to get more sleep...

Any way, post photos and post often ... ... ... Unless you're into disease'els, then don't bother with photos...

Yes, welcome to the forum, and don't be shy about asking questions. Lots of experience here and there are no dumb questions.

That being said there is no implied guarantee about the quality of the answers.

@Anveo, seems someone forgot to tell you one little thing -- important, to be sure -- but little. Well, sorta little.

See, @Moose2013 likes pictures in posts. He likes pictures of most things train-related, except diseasels, but even he's been known to post a photo or two of those infernal (please note the spelling) combustion machines. N scale models only, of course.

A lack of photos can rile Moose, and he's been known to sorta express his displeasure. In person. On hooves. In a Stampede.

Do you recall the scene from "Rogue One" where the Death Star fires and the planet starts to break apart? Well, that 'taint nuthin' compared to a Moose Stampede. And there aren't any Jedi to help you. Obi-Wan Kenobi could come to life and he's not stopping a Moose Stampede.

    So please post photos.
