This looks like the spot where I am supposed to introduce myself:

Hi, I'm Steve, and I have doing N Scale MRR for a whole 2 months.
I plan to model mostly modern Japanese railways (bullet trains, railbusses and everything in between!).
I've got a small 75 X 120 cm former kitchen table as the dedicated train table.
    I've got a 4-car Kato bullet train, and a Kato GP42.

I'm looking to learn how to do scenery, and how to plan a permanent layout - once I have a house anyway.

Welcome Sedril! You'll find lots of support around here for all aspects of n-scale. I'm looking forward to seeing your bullet train setup. As for the layout size, you can do a lot in that space with n-scale! My own layout is 6 feet by 3 feet (183cm x 91cm), so not much larger than yours, and I've learned an incredible amount working on it.

    Again, welcome!

Gene My apologies old chap - sometimes humor doesn't translate well into print. Not wishing to cause offence, the post has been removed.

Oh no, Komata, I took as it was written! I have nothing but the highest respect for you. I know that you have a great deal of knowledge in the hobby and always welcome your comments. No offense at all! I love humor - and I don't mind poking fun at myself. So please don't feel that you offended me in any way. Like I said, no one has asked me to leave ( at least not yet!). If any thing this post was easily misinterpreted.
    Komata, I'm not asking!
    asking for what?
So, no harm on either side. Mom would have said 'If you can't say anything nice then keep your mouth shut!' I should have followed that mantra!

    Default Introduction

    Hello all,

I came here a few months ago looking for a forum that was exclusively N Scale, so I registered and then forgot about this place until tonight.

My name is Robert. I am 18 years old and grew up in Shoreview, Minnesota near the Soo Line and Wisconsin Central tracks, hence my username.

I am currently building a layout on a door in my room using Kato Unitrack. I hope to be able to learn some new tips and tricks and meet some new people.

    Hi All,

I'm a newbie in this world, I don't own any track yet, but I've been reading for weeks.
I am aiming at developing a cheap/affordable solution, using my own yet to build track as a testcase.

I have been gathering information for weeks now, but still know nothing.
My setup will look something like this (please keep in mind, price is very relevant)
    - dcc
    - minitrix wissels + peco flex (1st question)
    - some opensource or freeware on (Virtual) PC used as a controller
    - Virtual PC with command station
    - S88modules and decoders gathered from all over. (US and Hungary in the picture)
    - maerklin booster
    - all runs automatic, I dont intend to do manual control

I am buying leftovers from Ebay, talking to a guy in Hungary that makes cheap modules and so on...
One of the first questions (or new questions); should I use PECO 80 with minitrix switches? Or Peco 55? I know 55 looks better, but I am not that picky...

    Thanks all and talk soon!

    Hello Everyone,
I stumbled across this forum searching for an Athearn N Scale FP45 Undecorated locomotive.
I am currently on the siding under the red signal for a few more posts. Thanks to Brian for your help in registration.

I have been model railroading since 1972 (started with a Lionel 027 Thunderbolt express set, which I still have.)
Went to HO in the late 70's and N in the early 1980's. Then came kids, and space was at a premium so the trains went into storage.
Fast forward 24 years at a yard sale in Ludington MI and a box of train stuff for $20... I was reeled back in.
Decided to focus on N scale again for space constraints, but I like the ability to build layouts inside coffee tables (which I did).

I am focusing on the 1960's & 1970's Big 4 North/ South Line running from Wabash, In to St Joe, Mi. Some really creative architecture & structures. The line ran 3 miles from my boyhood home, and my neighbor was a fireman on the Big 4 line until they switched to deisel in the mid to late 1950's.

Been reading the posts here & like what I see.

    Welcome

Hey JC I am just a Geriatric Newbie. I just had to Google Map you to see where you hailed from and here I was thinking that you were to the west of my old mate in Whitfield, Indiana when in fact you are to the North Nor East up towards Fort Wayne.
The PRR had some action in Fort Wayne. So I now have a thread on where abouts you are in this planet. I am a little away on the other side of the Pacific Lake from you but it is good to say good day. Enjoy your stay and ask a lot of questions. There are some great folk out there to help you on your way.

    Regards

Hi all!! My names Donny and im 31 and live near MA/NH line. I havent had a railroad in 15-20 years. I am now in the process of gathering all the info I can to start building a small dcc nscale setup. I have 3 boys ages 2,4,5. My middle boy cant get enough trains in his life. Reminds me of me back then!! I forgot how much I love this hobby. I wish I had the amount of room I did back then. But we will go as big as we can for now. Im guessing 36x80 using Atlas True-Track.

Well off to get more info

    Talk to you soon
    Donny

    Default Just joined

I just joined today and have been poking around looking at the different forum topics. Lots of great information. I have recently retired and now I want to build an N scale layout. I have not been active for a few years but have been in model railroading since a little kid and have had previous home layouts in HO and N and I have also been involved in club layouts in the past.

Although I live in an apartment I do have a 12X15 room available to build a layout in (nephew owns the complex). I will probably build a u shape DCC layout using about half the space available. The era I like is the 60's and 70's with mostly 4 axle power. Favorite roads are Maine Central, Boston and Maine and New Haven.

My wife will be involved as she enjoys the hobby also. She loves to build trees.

I also enjoy railfanning and photography.

Hope I can be a helpful member and also get a lot of useful information here. Looking forward to it.

    Dennis
