    Default Another introduction

    Hello all:

My name is Mark. I am 44 and from Wisconsin. Like a lot of others, my prior "train experience" was HO as a kid. I have decided to get back into railroading and have decided on N scale due to size constraints. I have been lurking here for awhile and have gotten tons of info.

For example, never would have thought about using foam board as a base(my experience consisted of putting ground cover directly on plywood as a kid) or using dryer sheets and POP for contouring, and on and on.

I am still in the planning stages of my layout(likely going to go the unitrack route). Once i get more info i will post some pictures.

So glad I stumbled up this site.

    Default Hello

Hello, I am a novice model railroader. I am 36 and have been fiddling with the hobby for a couple decades. Only until recently do I now find myself with enough time, space, and $$ to dive further into the experience. I have a 4x8 layout with one outer loop that switches into a central figure eight. I also have a Styrofoam mountain and other scenery nearly complete on 2/3rds of the layout. I look forward to seeing what everyone else in the forum is working on and learning from your experiences as well as learning new techniques.

Greetin's! Bryan tells me I'm going to be here for a while (an order or prophecy?) so I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Rick Balassaitis and I live in the southwestern portion (Sewell/Washington Twp) of New Jersey. (We are suburban/rural and belong to the Philadelphia region (unlike like northern NJ folks who actually belong to the greater NYC area).

I spent 30 years collecting equipment while raising a family. I finally got around to starting a permanent layout in the late 90s (4'x8') and then put in a large expansion a few years later. A portion of the layout was shown in the Nov/Dec 2011 issue of N Scale magazine (and can be seen at: http://www.allscalelayouts.com/R/Asp...001280&Scale=N ). It was a fictional division of the Pennsylvania RR up the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania. It got about 80% completed.

Unfortunately my wife required major back surgery which necessitated a move to a one story home without a basement. I salvaged a portion of the yard and the original 4'x8'. The 4'x8' will highlighted in the Sept/Oct 2012 of N Scale Magazine (and then sold off since it is the way of the new layout and I have very limited space). The purpose of the article is to show how much can be done in a small space and hopefully get some armchair railroaders into building mode.

My new home has a loft which I have confiscated from my wife. I am now modeling the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines through Westville (where I grew up) and Woodbury, NJ circa 1950s. A friend talked me into blogging its progress. (http://rickb773-prsl.blogspot.com/)

Despite being fortunate enough to get published, my modeling skills are probably only in the B/C grade range. I am disappointed that I haven't found any other modelers in my local area because I think a local group is what really pushes you to get better. I have been on the Railwire forum for 2 years for which I think Bryan has correctly assumed has made me somewhat defensive. I have made a lot of great friends there. As accused, it did have an Eastern tilt (which I liked) but lately the Canadians have been dazzling everyone with their work.

Having said that, I have been impressed with the friendliness of nScale.net, your family friendly orientation, and your ability to stay on topic. So Bryan is correct I will probably be here for a while. Happy modeling, Rick (rick773 (at) hotmail.com)

Hi, everyone. I am Kelvin. I found you folks last week and I have enjoyed reading your posts and have learned a couple new things since. I have been building a movable 2x8 layout for 1 1/2 yrs. I work 55-60 hrs a week and have multiple interests so some of my progress is slow but enjoyable. My layout is loosely modeled after the "Highland Line" that runs out the north end of Des Moines, IA that is run by the UP. I tried to think prototype but some structures just don't fit so adjustments have to be made..LOL..After all, I am the architect, boss, dispatcher and chief grunt so I can do anything I want. I had a 3x8 layout with a mainline oval and decided after 7 yrs I didn't like it so I sold it on Craig's List. I made it 6 months before I started this layout. I enjoy the industrial area of model railroading more than I do mainline running. Keep the great ideas coming.
